About LinkBacksHey guys. I'm looking at upgrading from the old 22lr for rabbit shooting. As where I shoot there's not much opportunity for close range shots, its mostly 100m plus. The rifle in using is a old norinco jw15 that's bout 15 years old. So instead of just getting a new 22lr I thought id try out something new. I've never shot a 17hmr or the 22mag, so I'm looking for some advice on which calibre to go with.

I had a blat on. 17HMR for the first time a couple of weeks back. Great calibre.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

I bought a WMR as I could use it on goats, wallabies, and LR rabbits.
HMR is a great calibre though. If only going to be using for LR rabbits I'd go HMR.Life is natures way of keeping meat fresh

What about suppressing them? I've heard the 17hmr can lose alot of power from it.

WMR over the HMR for my needs.
Velocity is thrilling,but diameter does the real killing.

Nah. Shouldn't loose anything with suppressor - except for noise.

17 HMR yes please, really enjoy mine, rabbits, magpies, hares, plover etc, been out to about 250 metres with it, wind moves them around but what a nice calibre to shoot! Ask @Happy he'll tell you!

Have owned both and for small game 17HMR without question.
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.

Is the 22mag likely to make a mess? I quite like a good rabbit stirfry so I don't wana waste to much meat if i miss the headshot.

HMR probably makes more of a mess.
Even if you're using a 22lr, head shoot them if you want the fluffies to eat.Life is natures way of keeping meat fresh

there's a pretty nice 22mag savage in hunting and fishing for an alright price at the moment so i'm thinking i might go with that. guna have a go with a 17hmr on the weekend though so i'll wait till after that before i purchase any thing.

.17 would be my choice. It covers the 22 plus pretty much the 22 mag. Shortened and suppressed you ll find it hard to beat
Spend as much as you can afford on optics . Mine will shoot myna birds in the head at 100 every time.
Scopes worth more than the gun though"This is my Flag... Ill only have the one ..
