    17hmr Ammo

What ammo and brand have you found most effective on possums, realizing different guns like some ammo better then others. Just your average possum shooting no real long range action

Avoid Winchester...case splitting poor consistency. Hornady and CCI made in same factory last time I looked into it.

Prefer 20gr, they are quieter in my suppressed Savage semi.

20gn could possibly be better at close range but I found the 17gn more accurate in my rifle.

Mine seems to prefer the 20gr in the hornady @100m have but really for possums its only really max 50m so can sight in for both. Pick up a both in town today only had hornady 20gr there so bit hard to buy anything else.

I used hornadys 17 and 20s but ended up liking the CCI pricepoint may have being the reason for that I cant remember all shot well head shots were a must body shots were no good if you want the fur very messy exits all close range though

I only used Hornady Vmax 17gr, I have tried the 20gr but just found my Marlin 917 likes the 17gr.
Never used them on possums as either too close and it could just go through them and half the time they’re in the tree and I’d rather use HV .22 to punch through some of the debris.
I have purchased the 200 pack of Hornady vmax, not sure if it’s a budget version but it’s the same product code with an extra digit have yet to test it and I have 1 packet of CCI VNT to test as well.
Grouchy Smurf had it right all along...

It is worth trying the Federal 17grHP in the Black bulk 250 pack. I was using Hornady .17gr in my rifle but when I tried the Federal it was more accurate and I got some devastating kills on wallabies. If you keep an eye on Trade Me Gun City have a weekly $1 reserve auction for a pack of this and it normally goes for around $80 - $90. It normally retails $119 for 250 rounds.
    Certainly worth trying.
