.17HMR short barrels

I am looking to shorten the barrel on my CZ 455 .17HMR for better front carry ergonomics.

The rifle is mounted in a Boyds stock and fitted with a PARD IR 008. The barrel is currently 19" and it normally wears a Gunworks .17 suppressor.
With the current overall length, and front sling, when walking up hill the suppressor tends to come into contact with the ground which is a safety issue.

I am thinking about shortening the barrel to as little as 12-13". Based on the experiment done by Bullberry, this will knock around 120fps off the muzzle velocity, but considering most of the shooting with this setup is >130m, its not going to make a nats tit difference to the trajectory.

Shortened mine to 15”. No problem. Apparently 15” was the optimum length to shorten to with loosing too much velocity

ANSCHUTZ (lets be honest, the best rimfire manufacturer in the world) has half of their hunting 17hmr at 14”. So wouldn’t worry

my first thought as well, use a sling . . 2nd was i wouldnt want to loose any velocity, not a lot to start with and resale value will take a hit.

For night time thermal/IR shooting, you need a free hand for the thermal bino's, and a free hand for the shooting sticks. Having the rifle slung across the front (like the good old days of AR three gun) is definitely the most efficient method of carry for transitioning from walking to shooting off the sticks.

Velocity average is 2,650fps out of the barrel as it is. Loosing 150fps doesn't do much in terms of hunting hold over out to 150m.
I definitely don't plan on selling the rifle. That will be someone else's problem after I have passed on :D

I have seen pictures of the Anschutz short barreled rimfires but never thought to look at the barrel lengths. That is encouraging.

Change suppressor to an over barrel?
