Hey Team
As i eagerly await the arrival of the new ruger 17hmr i may as well get started with the accessories plan.
I will be adding a suppressor but am not sure which to go for. What brand/type have you been happy with and what have you learnt by fitting one to a hmr?

I have a gunworks muzzle forward on mine which works well, but if i was to do it again now, id look at using a lighter weight overbarrel type, have a talk to Darren at DPT, i think he does one for the hmr.
Go over barrel, or buy my gun works one, you can club them with the barrel if you miss:thumbsup:
I have a Bunny Buster on mine but he no longer makesthem. If I was going to put another suppressor on it would be a DPT, like the idea that you can add extra baffles for more noise reduction and I don't think you will find a lighter unit. Think they are a 22mag/17hmr suppressor

I like the positioning of this, 50% over barrel so not extending the length of the gun that much but there's something about the look of this thing that doesn't sit right with me. be better if it didn't have silver hex screws and the logo. Not keen on the cock sock but that has made me also think about scope height.

Do any of these cans force you to mount the scope higher than normal?
Its 100mm foward , you'd be better with a good muzzel foward can. You are only taming 5 grains of powder and the bullet crack will always be there. If foward length is a concern then Abes one is less than 100mm fitted and gunworks stubbie is only 75mm.
Scope hight shouldn't be an issue but flare could be if you mount a light.
would it make much of a difference if i reduced the barrel length by 3 or 4 inches? the standard model comes with a 22" barrel, compact comes with 18" barrel. Much if any noticable accuracy with a shorter barrel?
I did some research 16 is where it's at. Shortening mine soon MAE is my choice it's lasted the longest ( my fourth) but mine gets used x6 out of 7 days
so 16" is as short as you can go without hurting the accuracy? is that because the pill is rotating enough at that point?Quote:

The test info i read on this a while back was that 18" was the optimin bbl length for the hmr, i cut my Savage classic back from 24" to 20" when i got the GW muzzle forward can.

thanks for that. To me it reads that the best is 18", what's your reasoning behind favouring the 16" barrel?
Because it will mean a loss of 25 fps which as pointed out by others is a nothing. The object is to make my gun as short and accurate as possible. I have not cut it yet choosing instead to fit a VX 3 to it which popped up on here.Quote:

It is still going to get the chop to 16. Just have a few trips to get through first that require the funds ha ha ha ... My range is 200mtrs before reaching for .223 or .243 so the 25fps wont worry me at all.
I ll try to shoot a target group before and after if I remember as I suffer from CRAFT .... Cant remember a f in thing ha ha .. Oh lightening the trigger was a good thing as well.

Bullberry Barrel Works - 17 HMR "Match" Velocities
This site reckons 44fps loss from 19 to 16. But with every rifle and ammo combination being individual I think its a bit of a lottery and still not overly important. Shorter barrels are also harder on suppressors and just to be completely contrary:D I sold my anschutz as i found it to small and light, I much prefer the full sized feel and weight of the weihrauch.
