is 17wsm ammo available in NZ... if so what prices?
17 hornet , fox gun. Dose about 4200. Real mans 17
I've been watching 17wsm for a while now and so far I'm not at all impressed with accuracy . I would go hornet for the reason you can make your own ammo to suit your liking and give the 17wsm time to sort their shit out and get accurate ammo .
Give the 17wsm time to curl up and die more like it, it had big shoes to fill after all the hohar that was made about it, but seems to have underwelmed since its release. Mostly due to ammo not being as cheap or as available as it was touted to be and the Savage Bmag is a bit of a dog.
The 17HH seems to have taken off prety well though, and with it being available in a CZ, id certainly be leaning towards that and reload.
One of the probs with the WSM is the lack of a good rifle in that calibre, choice or Ruger or savage, both seem to be dogs, Im probably going to have to go with the Hornet CZ, even that would not be my first choice of firearm, but they tell me they shoot well. Owned a CZ in 17HMR and sold it real fast and went with the Anshultz which still has that horrible bolt on it, but handles and shoots amazingly well. decisions, decisions, decisions and do I REALLY need it:O_O:
Why not 204 for the ultimate bunny exploder. Can't see the point in stepping up to hornets, you might as well go all the way and get a 204 imo
I went .22 then got a hmr, 22 never came out of cabinet after that, I then got a 204 and the hmr never came out of the cabinet... I then got a 338
How about .17 Remington? :on fire:
I have strong liking of the .17, had an HMR for many years and always will.I look at the center fires now and then but for my use the advantage of extra distance they give would hardly ever be use full, most of my shooting is inside 175 yds. Any night shooting Id loose 50% of my brass so a rimfire becomes way cheaper and its nice not have scramble around looking for brass to reload for a change. Ill end up with a .17 hornet or more likely a Mark IV one day but only because I want to. In the mean time the .222 gives any extra distance I might need and is more use full overall.
Yep Im just looking at noise and convenience. I can get out over 200 but not with the 17HMR
build yourself a nice little 17 fireball, bugger all powder to load, super accurate and easy to get 221 FB cases to neck down.
some of the pro fox shooters over here are using them and have heard nothing but good tings about it, might have to build one myself?;)
VARTARG
Or there's the akley hornet as well
Ok so a 17 Fire ball is a .222 Remington necked down to .17, so mod would be a .222 and re-barrelled to .17 ??
NO ,
Its not a 222 case , its shorter than that , its a 221 fireball case
204 ruger people 204....
Or as 7mmsaum said, if you want to be real simple 223.
The noise difference between a hornet and a real centre fire would be neglible if both were suppressed
We need to have a Forum gong shoot soon
.223 only

I agree with all saying 204 Ruger.
I'd go for 17HH if I didn't want a full size center fire, but if I wanted a step up in a full time varmint cartridge, it'd have to be 204.
Does the same speed as 17 Fireball but with a much better projectile, will get the same ballistics as a 22-250 but with way less powder, so longer barrel life.
The 20cal bullets have extremely good BCs for the weight.
What do you want to know, I have currently two CZ .17 hornets and a CZ .204, as well as a .17 fireball on a sako, also in stable a Sako vixen .222, a .22 hornet, sold off the .223 and both 22-250,
Pretty happy with the .17 cal for varmints and .204, and if I really want to reach out and touch something I take the 6mm Remington.
If you are after a cheap to load big on performance walking bunny gun, the .17 Hornet really punches above its weight, and leaves the hrm in the dust.
The winchester .17 mag rimfire as yet, dosnt have any quality rifles, and reports from the few guys I know, who have them are they should have waited.
If I had to pick only one it would be the .17 fireball, mostly because this is rifle and scope combo, but it's my most accurate rifle, and the 25gr v-max has a Bc of .230 so same as most normal .22 cal 50-55 gr weight and is faster and flatter, and less powder. Great long range varminter.
The .17 hornet or .22 hornet are the best value in cost to run. 10 gr powder, And performance is at least double your .17 hrm or .22 mag.
Lots of choices, kinda depends on weather you want a multi purpose rifle, ie .223 or .22-250, a long range bunny sniper .204 or .17 fireball, or a walkabout bunny buster then one of the two hornets.
There is others ie.222, .17 Remington, what are you trying to achieve??
Winchester do a single shot 1885 Low Wall in 17wsm...
Attachment 39556.17 HRM, .17 Hornet, ..17 Fireball, .204 ruger, and . 22-250.
Have a 17HMR now, love it for hares and long range bunnies. Makes too big a mess on bunnies I'm trying to recover. On the quiet places I'll still use my 22 subs. When I need to go really long, I have my 243 loaded with 55gr nosler BT's. So a 204 and 223 aren't worth it for me.
Just for Maca:
Model 1885 Low Wall Hunter Rimfire Octagon, -- Winchester Repeating Arms -- Product Model
Sexy as :-)
20 vartarg (221fb necked to 20cal would have a little more wind bucking ability than the 17 version one would think but that's only coming from limited experience with 17hmr and 204 ruger which are way different beasts to each other
I have a mate that swears by his cooper Vartarg, I have sizing dies, was going to rebarrel my Sako to it, if it wouldn't shoot the 25 gr v-max, nothing between these two cal,.(17 fireball and .20 Vartarg). the .17 25g v-max has higher Bc than the 32 gr v-max and 35 gr Berger, the vartarg is strangled a bit with the 40 gr weight.
I am doing load development with my .204 CZ Varmint at the moment, it giving me 1/2" groups with the 32&35 gr bullets, with benchmark and varget, won't shoot 40 gr very well, and is amazing with the hornardy 45 gr soft point, I have not been able to find any 39 gr Sierra to try.
