    223 rechamber

I know nothing of Engineering or Mechanical wizardry, but...., I've been thinking.

Would it be as easy as buying a Tikka T3x in 223 @ 1-8 then getting said wizard to rechamber to 22 250 therefore ending up with a Tikka 1-8 twist 22 250. ?

apparently tikka barrels dont like being rechambered.....depending on which smithy you talk to...also would need diferent bolt etc.... maybe barrel would work, but would need .243 etc action I THINK....

Bigger boltface so would need that opened up, but if you could source a 223 1in8 barrel and have it reamed (most smiths don't like reaming tikka barrels) you could fit to the appropriate tikka action, 08 prefrence, could really use any non magnum action 270, 3006 etc but may have issues with long bolt stop and magazine. I'd suspect it would Be fine though, just my opinion and there are probably a heap more people on here with better knowledge on the subject. Or just call a good gunsmith

Good replies lads, thought the Boltface may have to be opened a bit but didn't say any thing as I don't know much about such things.

However I would be interested to know why people don't particularly like rechambering Tikka/ Sako barrels??

The barrels are too hard on reamers but there is a few gunsmiths which will do it still.

Not wanting to side rail you but as mentioned above you would have to open up the bolt face so another alternative calibre could be a .22 Terminator?

Most custom barrels are button rifled or cut rifled and made of a steel of " gentle" hardness.( exception being Lothar Walter and now bartleim barrels who offer a much harder steel to prolong barrel life)

The harmmer forged barrels ( tikka, Remington,Steyr, ruger...)tends to be a bit harder , and are there fore harder on the reamers. They also tend to have a longer barrel life.

Wouldn't you be better off getting something chambered in a .473 boltface first.
Pulling the barrel. selling that. $250-300 and then buying a new barrel?

Can even get a prefit barrel.
