243 bush big
Right so I bought the CZ 204, and am now hoping the boys in blue get the mail order form off in time for me to get it as a Christmas present
Now I've got a dedicated varminter I'm thinking of turning my 243 into a busy pig seeing as I'm not going to be using it on varmint now. I imagine they still shot well with a short barrel? I'm thinking the longest shots will be 300 meters.
Also I've got a big ass gunworks suppressor which is to big for what I want now so I'm hoping I can put it on the 204, will a 243 suppressor still give decent suppression on a 204? there is only .8mm difference in bullet diameter so I'd think it would still work decently.
cheers
Tom

Overbore cals, and the .243 qualifies, arent typically as effecient as some other cases in a short barrel configuration.
BUT, who fucking cares, cos like you say, 300 mtrs is a long shot.
Have at it I say. :)

Solid NZer response haha :D

just use a faster powder if your hand loading or expect a large fireball if your not!

Great choice for a bush rifle, the 243 is under rated in the bush, works great for me using 100gr Fed powershoks, they do the business. Mines 22inches, found no need to cut it short as perfectly fine in the tight stuff. Personally, wouldn't go to short, 18 or 20 max.

I remember shooting at Belmont range and feeling concussion thumping me from a guy's rifle from about five meters away - I asked him what caliber he was shooting and he said "just a .243, bit barky with the sixteen inch barrel though!" and he grinned like a fox eating guts :D
Holy frikkin fireball did it have some muzzle flash to go along with the blast! Don't know how much velocity it lost over a 22/24" job - maybe 150-250 fps? Definitely good for s#*ts and giggles, though perhaps 16" is a little short for me personally lol

I was thinking 16 or 18 and a suppressor on the end to mitigate that boom or at least make it tolerable

My suppressed .243 is 20" and I simply love it.
18" would be fine with a muffler on it.
All you need to do is drop the bullet weight a little, use a faster powder and you will gain back the barrel length loss. If you hand load with 80grnTSX and a fast-ish powder you will get 3200fps and be able to do pretty muck anything with it. Another good projectile is the 80grn speer. N550 and Hybrid V100 both work well for me.

Had an 18inch Kimber 243. Shot deer at 300 with 100 grainers no worries. Sold it to von temsky and he is using federal fusion with the same result. Go for it.

I know a heap of locals that use short barrelled 22-250's as pig bail guns and for the occasional close deer, they love them and .243 cant be much worse, get the hacksaw out

Short barrels are awesome for short distance, I shoot a 14.5" .308 to 400yd on deer and its dropped everything so far. Pretty borderline at 400 as far as projectile expansion goes but so long as you hit some bone it's all good.
