Yes I don’t know why but it is noticeable, you are right about the 270 WSM that sits them down very quickly. Once again speed kills when placed in the right spot.

What would cause it? I cant think of a single reason outside of the mentioned bias for it.

The funny thing about “ Bias “ is that it can go both ways

This is why I aim to take out the front wheels, they can't go far with them out of action.

I use to love the 270...but doesn't make that much sense in these days of surpressors, dail scopes, lazer range finders etc. I now perfer short actions and short barrels.

    Greetings all,
Back in the 1970's I bought my first new rifle. It came down to a choice between a Rem 700 in .308 and a .270 in .270. I knew next to nothing about cartridges. The price for the .308 was $243.00 and the .270 was $275.00 I chose the .308 on price alone and it is still here. Somehow a .270 has never managed to find its way into my gun cupboard and likely never will. My favourite hunting rifle is my seldom used 6.5x55 T3. It is loaded with the Hornady 129 grain SST at 2,820 fps, a sub max load. 2,860 fps should be possible which is almost as good as the.............. Oh dear never mind.

A peculiarity about the 308 during the 60's and 70's (not sure of the exact period) was that the rifles and ammo in that caliber were exempt of sales tax. So they were a cheaper option.
This was because CAC made the 308 ammo here in NZ (that and 303). Later CAC started making .270 (firstly branded for the Forest Service) and .243 ammo and the sales tax went back on.

I suspect that this was the difference in price for the rifle. The dealer threw in two boxes of cartridges.

Not really, for my money...and my style of hunting (and I stress HUNTING not target shooting at 500 yards) the .243 is hard to walk past, cheap to run, flat trajectory, good out to 300 metres on anything NZ has to offer with the exception of Wapiti. It's comparatively light (a real relevance as I tend to walk in/up the hills rather than ride) what else, oh yeah, doesn't waste meat all reasons the caliber was popular with the deer cullers back in the day. As for more modern stuff like Needmore...say no more and lastly....it keeps you on your game, big calibers just make for lazy hunters, I have heard so many times "If I hit it, it's gonna die" from hunters walking around with glorified canons, no finesse.

Side note: whilst the above IS my opinion.....I'm also a smart arse so if you're inclined to be offended by my post....don't be, it's all tongue in cheek

I'd shoot a Wap with a .243 or other 6mm using a good bullet no worries at all

ok, good to know, I'm still learning what the limits of my Franchi are, for bigger game like big red's and Wap what would you suggest as a bullet that'll give certain knock down at say 300 metres
