Superformance will get you more velocity than 2209. I was running 162 AMAX in 20 in bbl with Superformance at 2820 fps. RL17 gets you more & RL26 more again but hard to get hold of these days & very pricey. Superformance is or has been readily available & reasonable cost

And a standard dpt over magnum is all you need
You need to give Hodgdon Superperformance powder a try it give great results in plenty of cases

Guessing can’t get enough 2217 in a case to make it worth it?

I might try the superformance out in my 18inch .284 My groups are .<.3 MOA with 154 SSTS using 2209 which I am loathed to change but I am curious.

Ho do you find the AMAX performs on game. I am using 154 SSTS in the 18 inch set up and 150 ELD-X in the 22 inch (Both rifles shoot around .3 MOA)

Thanks everyone for there considered input - very useful. I have decided to stick with both rifles and optimise them for separate applications. 22 inch for my alpine trips and 18 inch set up for bush/river valleys etc. Anyhow I had to justify this decision as I purchased a new Swaro 4-12 Z3 for the 18 inch rifle yesterday. So need to justify the decision somehow!!

Awesome, might be a bit too frangible for bush hunting ranges (under 100 yds ). Traditional wisdom says they excel at speeds 2600 fps or less. But plenty of comments on here with folks using them at 50yds or less with success. Keep your 154 SSts for bush shooting

I’ve mentioned this before about the construction of the ELDM tip in conjunction to the core. Because they’re a target bullet, the important “space” behind the tip in terms of terminal performance and how they’re connected to the rest of the bullet doesn’t get the same QC as the ELDX, which means you may get the odd blow up at close range/higher speeds.
Hornady have mentioned this in a podcast, as being the reason why they don’t recommend them.
Never experienced it personally but have seen a mates video of an up close roaring stag being shot and it running away after a blow up. He shot it the following year and found the bullet lodged in the flesh of the neck.

Cheers chainsaw. I have had such good real world experience with the 154 SST's close up on pigs/thar and deer - so I am going to stop overthinking other bullet options. So consistent and great accuracy - they just work. Plus they don't cost the earth!

The 2600fps I mentioned above means terminal velocity not muzzle velocity.
