284 on Husky action

Thinking about building a do everything rifle...out to 600 yards or so.
At the moment I run a Tikka Rem Mag which is too much gun for me really.
As I'm getting older the muzzle blast (even with a suppressor) does my head in...

I'm playing around with 150 grain bullets with 2209 and 2213 to tame things a bit...
Or I can sell the Tikka and build a 284 (or 280) on a Husky 1640 in 6.5x55 that I will never use (because I have no faith in a 6.5 projectile out to 600 yards)...

The Husky is a magic gun for something built in the early 60's...lightweight and accurate...
I'm thinking a 22 inch tru flite barrel...ceracoat...new speedlock firing pin...Talley light weights and carbon stock...3-15 Zeiss on top.

I hear negative things about the Mauser action for accurate builds...but this old gun shoots sub moa all day long...

What do you guys think about the action for 1/2 MOA accuracy?
And what velocities can I expect from safe loads with the 162 eldm and ADI powders...
I really want at least 2800fps which I know will be a breeze with RL 17 if its available...
But it would be nice to hit those velocities with a conventional powder...because I want to burn up 100s of rounds a year...

I'm a big fan of the Husky 1600 action. Very underrated. If the rifle has had a hard life then yeah, go and get some work done, but if it's a nice original gun, then leave it alone and modify something new or one that needs a Birthday.
There's no reason the action can't be a real laser if it's put together right.
Carbon Fibre stock for that model may be a bit hard to find, I'd have a chat to your local maker before you start.
With the 284, I'd be a bit hesitant before you choose that cartridge as it has very straight sides, with little to no case taper- the Husky actions were mostly set up for taper case cartridges and you will run into feeding issues as the mag follower and feed lips will need re-profiling.
One things for sure, there wouldn't be many rifles like it in the hills if you had the work done. I thought of doing it myself a couple of years ago, but I've since sold my 1600 as it was a mint original.

Load your 7RM with 162 eldm to 2800fps (or whatever you fancy) and spend the thousands you've saved on the rifle project on hunting trips.

And carbon fibre stock for tikka will be easier to get than for a husky.

Shit photo...but the 6.5 is pretty nice...the walnut stock is adapted off an old Winchester...and the bottom stock is my plug for the mold I intend to make.
Have a appreciated your tips FRST...and I'm pretty sure I can make a tidy enough carbon stock that suits me...

For sure...but once you get down to 55 grains of powder you have a more compact gun...shorter barrel with a smaller suppressor.
I have to prove the point to myself yet...but the goal is to kill things dead at 600 with less muzzle blast...
At the moment with the Rem Mag I yet slightly fuzzy vision in my shooting eye after a handle full of shots...and not so much a headache but I sure as hell don't want to pull the trigger again for a day or two...old age

As mentioned, mauser controlled feed can be a bit of a shit with minimum taper cases. They load ok with a slam feed but not so good being gentle and slow. Maybe a push feed action would be better with the dumpy 284 case.

NZ Hunter have been singing the praises of the 7RM in "super pig" guise. (20" barrel and suppressor). They have mentioned it in their last two magazine issues with loads for longer ranges than the standard bush pig type rifles. Could be worth a look but I get the impression you're keen on a more elaborate project, and fair enough.:thumbsup:

Don't change a perfectly good hunting rifle sell it to me and use a Tikka or Remington instead.

Can’t comment on the Husky action but the 284 will do what you want speed wise. I have 2 284’s one built on a Weatherby MkV Ultralight 20 in bbl 2850 FPS with 160TMKs, run a magnum DPT suppressor and it’s a joy to shoot. In a Stug cf stock bare rifle 5.5 lbs. The other is built on a Tikka action 22in Truflite bbl get 2930 FPS with 162AMAX. In both cases running Superformance powder. Could push faster with RL17 but accuracy drops off.

It would be nice to be able to buy his articles on line.
I've just started playing with 150 grain bullets which lets me use 2209...284 loads basically.

And I have thought about rechambering the Rem Mag to SAUM (if that's possible) and running gentle loads in that...
The Tikka leaves me cold...and the Husky is such a beautiful thing (but not original like FRST's one).

I know what you mean about the blurry vision. I got that with a 708 tikka plus a sore shoulder that took a year to go away. Probably your tikka is too light for the cartridge.

A rifle that can kill deer reliably at 600yd will never be an all rounder. Such a gun would look like a tikka 7RM with 26" barrel,big gunworks suppressor or DPT with a couple of extra modules, NF/Z6/VX6 scope, heavy laminate stock (boyds) and a bipod, with handheld rangefinder, 3000 rounds downrange learning to call wind slope altitude etc: all up around 5kg.

An allrounder capable to 400yd would look like a 6.5x55 Husqv with 20" barrel , SHV/VX3/Z5, carbon or wood stock ,no bipod, perhaps a shortened suppressor and 1000 rounds downrange: 3.5kg.

I'm a full of shit talking about an all rounder...the Husky makes me think about bush hunting but it never happens...

I've been looking at recoil calculators and I hadn't been aware what a massive effect rifle weight had on recoil. That Tikka has always messed with my head and I had put the blurry vision down to muzzle blast...maybe it is recoil...a heavy stock might be part of the answer.

I can help out - how much do you want for the Husky? And then take the money and buy an action thats more suitable.

I put a laminated stock with limb saver on my 300WM T3 and it made a big difference to how easy it was to shoot well. I attribute it mostly to the extra weight but stock shape may have been a factor too.

Nah you are not dreaming a 284 or SAUM or 280AI will do the all round task you are after and very capable of kills at 600+.
Read some of the posts on here from guys who run 284s or SAUM for plenty of examples.
Stock weight and design can have a significant bearing on perceived recoil. But you don’t need to go heavy. I have cf stocks with limb saver recoil pads on most of my long range rigs including magnums. very light and recoil very manageable. I do all my load dev without brake or suppressor and have no problems with recoil. For a hunting rifle which I am going to hump around the hills I really I’m to keep the weight down. For an all rounder a 284 is hard to beat.

Get a better stock or a cheek riser for the tikka. The comb is to low on the factory ones and makes for both uncomfortable positions and an awkward recoil impulse

Plenty of 20inch magnums putting deer down at 600 with ease, do it myself, also put them to sleep at 10yards with same setup

What are you calling an all rounder what do you hunt

I did a 284 in tikka action 19" barrel and suppressor. With 2209 and 162s its nice to shoot, slow feeling recoil. I also have a rem mag and put it into a manners t4 stock, bit more weight and different profile made it a lot more polite under recoil

I think a 7x64 or a 280, would be less likely, to have any feeding difficulty's in that action. And are the equal of the .284 and easer to source brass.
Nice rifle those old 98 husky, ive got a 9.3x62, and had a 6.5 x55, lightweight long before, it was trendy, and nicely balanced.

I know nothing about the huskys, but do have a bit of experience with 284's (I have a 22" on a M595 Tikka, and a 17" suppressed on a T3).

I run 162gr Amax in the 17" 284 and can push them at 2750 without too much trouble with one of several different powders now all very accurately. If i push the loads a bit i can get 2800, but they are right on the edge of being very close to excess pressure signs.

With the 162 Amax at 2750 fps, at 600 yards it has almost 1400 ft lbs energy and just shy of 2000 fps velocity, Plenty enough grunt for deer at 600 yards, and my rechambered tikka barrels are plenty accurate out there too.

The 17" barrel with the DPT magnum suppressor is still 1 inch shorter than the factory 22" barrel, so its handy as to get around in the tight bush. Its definitely a true 6-600 yard allrounder in my book.

Ive also got a very lightweight 22" barreled 7mm SAUM, bare rifle is less than 5.5 lbs with a stug CF stock. I run the 162's at 3000 fps in that, and i need the DPT magnum on that to shoot it.

The short barreled 284 with the 162's gives it the legs to be a true allrounder, it is always used with the suppressor fitted so theres no mucking around with POI shift from can on to can off etc, its super easy to shoot, easy to carry around. I can fit the very long rounds with the 162's seated right out in the neck in the Tikka LA mag, its just an allround no drama work horse really. Could just about say that its really the only rifle i need (but dont tell the wife that).

I'm not sure the mag length would let me seat the Amax right out in a 280...I know nothing about the 7x64 and will have a look.

This has been an incredibly helpful thread...a huge thanks to everyone...

One of the biggest things I learnt was that my head wasn't being messed up by percussion (or shockwave)...
It seems to be all about my head firmly connected to the recoil of the rifle...which I guess is not so bad compared to some guns...
But when the round count goes up things start going to shit big-time...including my shooting...a snowball effect...and I like to shoot a fair bit...
My daughter is an Olympic athlete...I begin to appreciate how important confidence is to her performances...

And I hate recoil from a hunting point of view...even if I have a spotter a huge part of the joy is watching that bullet arrive...
And with the magnum in an awkward position you have got no chance if you are by yourself...

I think 284 or that type of medium sized 7mm is the answer...and I can push my Savage 7mm08 close to the velocities GWH is talking about with RL17.
Its got a heavy barrel but Tru Flite can reprofile it for really reasonable money...they wont re-chamber a well used barrel (its about 200 hundred mild rounds)

One of the drawbacks of the Husky for the 280 in particular and for all my shooting is that the Mauser doesn't top feed well...I hardly use the mag...
No doubt in my mind that Tikka long action is the way to go if I want a 284...

I might just go to the 150 eldx with a faster powder at 2850-2900fps until a nice 280 or similar comes along...its telling that you don't see so many 284s for sale...

I have a mate in the UK who built a 280AI for exactly the same reasons as you want to change, uses it all over the world, he’s a top bloke and has got all the numbers and so on, if you want I can put you in touch with him, he’ll be only too happy to help if you need I’m sure.

Well if your after a 280, then trade me has a real nice M70 Winchester and a CZ 550, as well as couple 280AI, at present.
7x64 and 280 rem brass is 20 thou difference in length, 7x64 normally throated longer than 280 rem.
I am developing loads for a Sako AV 7x64 at present, and it has a long enough action to fit a 375 H&H, 7x64 have lots of free bore, I cant get near the lands or mag length, with a Eld-x 162,
I was looking into a .284 myself, struggled to find brass, was offered a 7x64 Sako for cheap,

Seams rifle treads come and go a bit, nothing wrong with sum of the older cartridges, esp. when loaded to same pressures, as more modern ones.

I have a spare CF2 action that would be perfect for a 280 project. Plenty of length, great trigger and feed. Will fit into a Rem 700 blind stock. PM me if interested.
Regarding recoil. I have a 270 with a Bell and Carlson Kevlar stock. That stock, because of the soft Kevlar absorbs recoil to where it feels like shooting a 222.

Interesting that stock...reading Mooseman's posts a 270 with superperformance and the ELDX is a serious option...

two things to TRY ....down load the 7mm mag either go slower or lighter both will reduce felt recoil no end.
weight the stock........piece of piss to chuck some lead up her bum and fix it firmly in place....take off recoil pad and poke say half a pound of lead up there then fill with expandite foam,put but plate back on and go to range....
if you go to 7x anything or .280 or .284 somethingorother you are still using same barrel size just different amount of powder/velocity...you can do it with the 7mm mag
and for what its worth your 6.5x55 will kill stuff and do so well,feed it good loads and know where its going and it will do the job just fine........the creedmore crowd keep spoofing on about how good it is and your old girl was doing it before the designers of the newby even got out of daddies ballsack.
if your 7mm mag hasnt got a top notch recoil pad GET ONE NOW.
do all of the above and your rifle will be a pussy to shoot,no reason you cant down load it to just above 7mm/08 speed and dual load it so youve got gentle/mild loads for sub 200 stuff and more potent load for the occasional long shot.

GWH: could give a few details about your Tikka M595 in 284? M595 is a shorter action rifle - doesn't that cause a few problems with the magazine and the 284 cartridge, etc?

Yes you are correct, the m595 is a short action. It was a 7mm08 that has been rechambered.

I run 150 NBT as a mag fit load. Pushing them at 2970 fps super accurately from the 22" barrel.

I can run 162 Amax seated long as single feed at around 2900 no problem. But the 150 NBT at almost 3k seem to have worked bloody well.

Yes, Gunworks did my T3 and have done heaps of others. I believe they are not currently doing them tho, as rechambering Tikka barrels is hard work, something to do with the type of Stainless they use. Sounds like they buggered a couple of tikka barrels.

I have seen Dean Maisey saying that he will rechamber factory barrels to 284, he does fine work.

Was discussing my 284 plans with Dean a couple of weeks ago and he said it can be done but it's not always easy.

and its always going to be a bitch to not be able to pop one in the top.

The truth is that old Husqvarna was made before the first TV arrived on our street, and just after we got our first fridge.
It would be a crime to take of an original barrel that shoots ragged holes and replace it with something new made easy...
I might finish fitting it in that gorgeous (fucked up) piece of walnut and see how far away I can kill things with the 147 ELDX...
