    284 Winchester X-bolt conversion.

    Greetings from sunny Wellington.

As per the title, does anyone have any information or insight as to the possibility of converting a short action X-bolt from 7mm08 to 284 Winchester. I had a 284 on a Winchester Featherweight and going by my rough observations with my boys 7mm08 X-bolt the magazines do have a similar length and the X-bolt magazine will take a 140 grain 284 round perfectly but obviously the magazine would need modification. The bolt length is approximately 11 to 12 mm longer than a Model 7 bolt when measured from the back of the lugs to the nearest rear bearing surface of the bolt, if that makes sense.
I obviously could just do the Tikka thing but I've had three now and would prefer to do something different with this excellent cartridge.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

My son's xbolt 7-08 runs out of mag length with even 140 grn so I'm thinking if you load the 162 in the .284 they will be seated very deep

Yes you are right about that but the mag length is better than a Model 7. I would be running 140s and possibly the excellent Sierra 150s I have no need for anything heavier with my type of shooting.
    Thanks for the reply.

plastic mags and feed lips in the X Bolt? Getting the feeding right could be an issue?

What do you expect the improvement to amount to mate? In terms of MV.

Around the 2900 fps mark with 150s out of a 20 inch barrel should be about right. The MV isn't really the issue as I have had the caliber before. Mostly I'm after anyone that has input as whether its doable or at least worth a go.

    Cheers

If you can single load it easily i.e a longer round, I'd give it a go.
I'm not familiar with the magazine, so if you can feed it off the top, I'd do it.

    Each to their own though.

It's about a +3-4% difference in MV for a 140gr Sierra, between the two chamberings. Not sure if that qualifies as worth a go.

You asked the question, obviously have good knowledge on options from your Tikka comment, and like the X bolt so I say go for it. 139 flat base or 130 Speer are pretty short so you should get decent speed. Good luck
