Thread: 350 rem mag

Was looking at a project rifle with a bit of thump. Interested in 35 Whelan, 338-06. Had a p14 that proved not to be a shooter and was looking at rebarreling it in 350 rem mag.Decided it wasn't worth it and was going to buy a long action Howa or winchester for the project.
Along the way, a forum member was very helpful with advice and loaded some dummy rounds for the p14 project.
I asked on the off chance if he'd consider selling his 350. He did and I'm very pleased with this classic thumper. Parker hale supreme with a 16twist MAB barrel.
Seems to have a liking for the 225gr nosler. My challenge will be to come close to these well developed loads. He did provide the recipe though.

Those Super Safaris are becoming a bit of a classic. Cool calibre too, would be good to hear how she ends up performing on your next hunt.

Yep, can't wait...I'm about due to get lucky on an animal. Mr Foster says you get hydrostatic shock down to 2200fps with these bores which is about 250m with this load and about the same energy as my 308 will have at the muzzle. I'm picking tracking won't be an issue

Thats a nice looking bang stick, great group and I love the classic stock. Someone's done a lovely job of that.

Still you will need that to keep it on target between shots.
Do you have any idea what sort of velocity you are getting? Interested to compare it to my 358win.
(My old Hornady manual show it as 1-200 fps faster)
I settled on the 225 Game king but have not yet shot anything with then. Only shot goats with 357 bullets so far.

Reading Mr Foster's info almost tempted me to go and get some 200 gr round nose soft points just to see how much of a mess I can make.

These are loaded with ar2208. He said they were going 2800fps though notes on the drop chart show 2750fps. Well cranked with no pressure signs. I tried the 200gr interlock load which grouped around an inch. I thought they were softer to shoot. I might try some downloaded pistol bullets or cast sometime

What rifle is your 358? These loads go a bit faster as it's a long action and bullets are seated out to suit. When I replicate them I will note the COAL well and probably back off a couple of grains to start out.
I think it's a sporter weight barrel...whole rig is right about 4kg.
I"m lucky to come by this and would have spent much more building a 35Whelen...that would have been cool though as I was going to buy the mint push feed winny in 280 on TM to do it

Nice. The stock looks original. Back when I was a lad I worked in Tisdalls sports shop in PNth after school (circa 1963) and the rifles of choice those days were the BSA Hunter and later the Majestic.

The Parker Hales were viewed as a budget rifle and rather clunky. But seeing your one now I realise that by todays standards they were damn good solid and well made rifles. The gold trigger was a nice touch as was the 'scope friendly safety. The cheaper PH's had the Mauser swing over safety that interfered with the 'scope, and some models had an adaption that engaged before it struck the scope.

Some Parker hale notably the safari were actually Springfield bolts and actions , not Mauser. I beleivevPH was using Spanish made Santa Barbara actions as well at some point.

The Springfield bolts were used on the PH Midland models that came later. After Ph finished with the Santa Barbara made 98 actions.

Nice rifle, I would like a med bore stainless, with short barrel and irons for up here in Canada, currently got a 358 win and a 9.3x62, had a 350mag Ruger stainless lined up, but no irons so let it pass,
.358 cal 225gr Serria and 200gr Hornardy round nose I've both shoot deer with very effective,
50gr varget, is letting my Ruger 77 in .358 win push, the 225gr Serria's to 2450fps, you should have at least a 100 fps on top of that.

Good to hear some memories and discussion about these old shooters. Something about having them shoot better than they ever did appeals to me.
If I had more money than brains I'd do the p14 as well. A member sent a link with some pre fit criterion barrels for them. Alas I am short of funds and just enough foresight to send the p14 to said member.
If I'm ever living the dream and bust out of orkland, I may have a little beat in North America Southernman, where this may come into its own for discouraging a grizzly among other things.
