    .458 Socom

Anyone here built one on a bolt action before?

Something a bit different, short range but big punch.

I have some bolt guns on the way at the moment.

I decided on the 450 Bushmaster instead.

Easier brass & much better selection of .452 projectiles for pistol & rifle.

The Socom is .458 so predominantly big hard rifle projectiles & getting brass can be "interesting"

Really looking forward to getting the Bushmasters go in light portable rifles

Mainly aimed at using subsonic pistol projectiles.

Plenty of grunt with supers too

Awesome cheers KG, yeah the .458 looks a prick to get componants and expensive to run but thought it would be a fun project. Having a read it appears it's pretty easy to convert a Savage SA .308 into a .458 rig.

How hard is it for the .450? Will be doing some research into both. .458 apparently does a good job with the 300gr ttsx.

The 450 Bushmaster is essentially a 284 win cut off at the shoulder with a small primer pocket.

You can't cut the 284 win brass down easily however because the brass is too thick & would need reaming or turning

Hornady make the Bushmaster brass & there was some loaded ammo available 250 FTX at an advertised 2200fps out of a AR

The Yanks are loving the Bushmaster in the AR shooting all sort of stuff like Deer, Pigs, Elk & Bears.

Looks like from my research the BM will work in a rifle using the 243-308 case.

I will be building them on Tikkas, Rem 7 & 700.

Like your setup there Nibblet. I want to have pretty much the same setup but in either 223 or 308 for target/varmint/fun shooting. Did you buy a Rem 700 Tactical as your project base and work from there?

How do you find the B&C Medalist Tactical Stock?

Was just an example sorry. Wish it was mine. Was what I was thinking of doing but might just have to wait for KG little beaties.

One pictured is based off rem 700 and apparently shoots 3.1inch groups at 300 yards @2100fps

Same setup with 700tact at 16inch with suppressor would be cool. 308 obviously

    Hi,
    I have built a 458 socom on a Winchester 70 short action.
I use it as a single shot and shoot subsonic loads. Despite the big suppressor I fitted on it , it is still quite noisy. The recoil is not bad, the effect on the target backstop quite devastating!
I own a chambering reamer and so does Gag Zigliani from high country suppressors.
Brass and reloading dies are available from US suppliers.
I shoot Speer 350 and 400 gr bullets with reloaders7 powder.

Awesome cheers mate. I'm waiting for a suitable donor rifle to pop up and then will look at going down this track. Seems like it would be a bit of fun

Eh? Who what where now? Don't think even one of your muzzle brakes would suffice on something that light? Nor would it protect from the grenade

You need a 45/70 Nibblet, not one of these butchered "it has to fit in an AR" rounds.
    I'm sure @Maca49 would agree.
