G'day...looking for recommendations for a sub $500 AR service rifle shooting optic 4x fixed to go on a Colt LE6920MP-B
I've looked and read a bit... Nice if you have $1K plus but reports re the cheaper Chinese stuff around $400 NZ seem shakey.
Anyone with a good experience under a grand? or should I just save up and get an ear full from the wife?

The Burris 332 and Vortex Spitfire would be your best options.

Still not sure so I'm heading out to the ASRA match tomorrow and see what others are using..really need and all round scope i think...plus then theres the Zombies

What do people think about those exposed turrets? I can see the sense of the BDC turret.

Get the x3 Vortex Spitfire from Reloaders. I did.
Bringing one in from the USA will cost you the same as buying from them with the dropping NZ$ and GST customs sting.
Spitfire has a better reticle than the Burris.
I'm going to miss the ASRA shoots this weekend, as have to head to Chch instead.
id be looking at a Nikon they are great scopes like this

Nikon make great optics I have vx3 leupolds and rekon Nikon is just as good if not better glass wise and they are a shitload cheaper (high end monarch models)
you can go online and put in your load details so the bdc gives you correct aim points at certain distances for your partular rifle its not just a baseline 55gn in a 16 inch barrel like other bdc can be (which can be miles off in your gun) you can calculate your own which is awesome

If you want lower magnification get a fx-II 4 power although it's a lower spec level than the fx-3.
Heck thats cheap
All those options would probably put you in Open class, being a variable or hunting/target style scope.
Be okay in club shoots, but not the Auckland Champs on tomorrow.
APPENDIX FIVE
OPTICAL SIGHT ELIGIBILITY LIST (JAN 2008)
Any of the following optics may be fitted to any eligible MSSA Service rifle. The
acceptable mounts are noted (where applicable) in the rifle specification list.
• ACOG, All fixed power ACOG scopes 4x magnification and less.
• Aimpoint Red dot scopes and Chinese copies.
• British SUSAT.
• Burris 332 3x (Affordable AR specific sight with holdover reticle)
• Colt type 3 and 4 power scopes including Chinese copies.
• ELCAN C79 & M145m4
• Elcan Spectre OS 4x scope (Note The Spectre DR 1-4X is not applicable)
• Eotech Holographic sight.
• Hensoldt Wetzler and ZF 4 x24 (G3 scopes).
• IOR 4x24 M2 & M1
• Russian POSP type 4 power scopes.
• Trijicon 4x ACOG, Reflex and Chinese copies.
• Trilux.
• US Optics SN12 4 power.
Note that the 3 and 4 power magnifiers that fit behind the Eotech and
Aimpoint sights are eligible but if they are fitted they must stay on the rifle for
the duration of the competition. Note: some mounts allow the magnifier to be
swung to one side to give an unimpeded view of the red dot scope. This is not
permitted during competition.
Any battery operated sights must remain on the rifle even if the battery fails;
it is up to the shooter to change the battery and no extra time will be given for
this.
All scopes must stay on the rifle for the duration of the competition. Cowitnessing
of red dot/holographic sights with iron sights is acceptable;
however the scope must be switched on and easily visible in daylight for the
duration of the competition.
The list purposely omits variable power scopes; the established military scopes
are all fixed between 1 and 4 power; to this end NZSRA will not disadvantage
existing shooters by allowing variable power scopes and civilian hunting or
target scopes in Service Class.
Damn, just spent 5 minutes typing up a raving review on my similar scope to the Leupold you're looking at but then it disappeared?!?! Anyway, great scope, useful in lots of real world situations. Super quick to get on target with running pigs etc.. and still able to shoot hares out to 200m with it set to 4x. Turrest are not as touchy as I first thought they'd be and with mine at least, you can set them to zero so easy enough to check if you think they may have moved. Have also taken it on and off a few times and it returns to zero pretty good using a Colt Cantilevered mount from Digit...Do it you'll love it;)
Great day at the ASRA.. a lot of nice guys there.
After looking through a few of the scopes on offer...I think I'll end up going for the Burris AR-332.
Number of reasons:
1) Budget - Kids eat most of it.
2) Real world use for me - Compared to the Elcan 4x I'd say both would do the job well out to 300 and probably 500 if the slug was good enough, but neither HEAPS better than the other to qualify spending $4x the bucks (Might eats my words, but lets see).
3) Murder - Wife will let me live past the bank statement.
300, 500 and 600m shooting tomorrow, lets see how the Burris holds up against the stiff competition.
Done...Grabbed the Burris AR-332 from NZAR15.
