Thread: 5mm remington custom rifle

I'm very seriously pandering to the idea of a 5mm remington, It would have to be custom rifle for obvious lack of rifles with which to fire it and Also to supress it thus not bastardising history.....

Anyone reckon that it could work and if so what action would be needed?

any help much appreciated!

Considering ammunition is impossible to buy as far as I can tell, and it's ballistically not going to be any better than .17HMR, I can't imagine why you'd want to.

hitting power though and serious shooters stocks it and we've already got a HMR in the safe. its something to use where a 22 hornet would be but just something thats a bit different, something special you know what i mean?

There is a article about the 5mm in the latest Guns and Hunting Mag. Seems they have started making ammo for them again.

I had that mag somewhere but I can't find it. Must be in the reloading room. Just reading a little more about it online, I don't see the difference between a modern 22 magnum and the 5mm rimfire. They both travel around the 2,100fps mark, only the 5mm shoots a slightly narrower bullet.

Owning whacky centerfire cartridges is fine, because you can always make your own out of all sorts, but doing this with a rimfire could be asking for trouble.

I don't have much to base this on, but as the 22mag and 5mm seem comparable, and the .17 appears to be superior to both, so I imagine the 5mm will probably flop again.

Why not instead get something like the 22 hornet you suggested or the new 17 hornet and suppress that?

Aaahhhh... But thats where you are wrong! Lapua makes 20 Tactical brass for Dakota Arms. So you get correctly headstamped, Lapua quality brass for around $120/100 cases...:thumbup:

Yep from 45SOUTH. I think the most recent lot was between $120-$130 per 100 including plastic ammo boxes
