I am wanting to put together a long range 6.5 upper.
I have a bushmaster lower I'm happy to use.
What will I need and any tips before I start spending?
Can I use the 223 bolt?
I want to keep my 223 upper as it is so will be buying a new receiver, barrel, handguard and gas parts?

You need a 7.62x39 bolt, @Digit might be able to help.
I have a spare and a 16" howa barrel, gas tube and gas block. Just need the barrel rechambered and profiled to fit the upper I have.
Robbie Tiffen doesn't have a reamer so need to source that.
One option might be 6.5x39?
Gunsmith over in Greytown? did a Grendal for a mate.
I am impressed with the Grendal as a round, if I wanted a hunter I'd do this as well I think
Brownells have the Grendel barrels which come with a bolt. Might be worth a bulk order (with mags) to share the export fee costs.
I like the sound of that! Who else would be keen?

Prices will be spiking a bit at the moment, but possibly not as much as after the November election.
What's the permit rigmarole like for multiple barrels etc? Same paperwork as one, or more hoops to jump through? If it's easy enough and someone experienced in dealing with the process does it, I'd be keen on multiple calibres for instance.
Would be easier if the mags are 5 rounds. Which is what Brownells have in stock conveniently.
Not sure if we would need a NZ import agent?
PS, better start collecting brass 7.62x39 cases for fire forming. :D
I've been waiting to get a 6.5 barrel and bolt for my AR too, so I'm also interested in a bulk order.
From memory once you go over US$100 you have to do the arms export paperwork, but it doesn't matter how much is on the order any longer - one item or many - it's just the one set of paperwork as far as the US in concerned. Now as for our Customs, that could get complicated with the multiple parties.....Quote:

Ken is just waiting on the final permit to pass then can start bringing them in. Will be a package with barrel bolt and mag I believe. Will be a 6.5 grendel bolt which is slightly diff dimensions than the 762 39 bolt. 18 or 20 inch only for now I think.Quote:

If you want ar10 performance have you thought about a gen 2 dpms? Nzrac has the lightweight hunter version and they are practically ar15 size
