What are Hardy barrels generally like for speed? I keep hearing that they're a bit looser than other custom barrel makes

    Thanks for the replies,
So it seems like it can go ok with some decent hand loading.
I guess it’s not much different than the likes of a 270win or the 284win.
You shorten the barrel you loose a bit of speed but at the end of the day it will still kill stuff at a reasonable distance with a decent load and the right projectile.

The 260 is the ticket for a light shooting cartridge that does alright on a shorter barrel - used within its limits. I’ve never really understood the 6.5 PRC and where it would fit for me. It’s not the cal I would want to shoot a big sambar, big bull tahr, big red stags and big wapiti at range with but it’s also not the cartridge I would want to cut down and make a nice little meat gatherer or up close shooter (like my 260).

My 18" bartlein 6.5prc on a tikka action is my favourite take on serious hunts with the potential for bush to long shots.
I'm up to 1000 rounds through it.
Im shooting 140gr bonded bullets in the bush @ 2860fps (not an optimal powder but plenty fast enough).
    147eldm @ 2820fps with RL26 at normal pressures.

I have shot plenty of animals with both. 500m on a red stag with 147s (goats further and steel to 1000m).
Lots of reds and sika in the bush with the bonded but also a red stag @330m.

The .260 and 6.5cm cant get those velocities safely at that barrel length with the 147s. If your planing to shoot 400m or less both will be good options however.
I dont want a 7mm (short mag or bigger cartridge ) as the recoil is too much for me in very light rifles while in hunting shooting positions.

I’ve have found the factory tikka barrels are no good cut down but if rebarrelled can get good velocity’s in 18-20” range
