Ive never had a 6x45 . .. but have considered a build many times.
The main thing that keeps putting me off is the "fit of the cartridge" to potential actions. It seems to me that most if not all "mini" type actions are too short in the magazine to do justice to the 6x45. If you go up to a short action there are other cartridges that will give superior ballistics. Currently Ive got a S&L in 223 and it has a very generous (for a mini action) mag length and 6x45 barrels are available as a factory option - but even at 61.5 or 2.42 its pretty limited compared with a 6 GT etc
As far as I’m concerned it’s all “ Pro’s “ and no “ Con’s”
My 6x45 is the Rifle that would be the one I would keep out of all my Rifles.
You are correct about the magazine length being an important component though to maximise it’s potential. I use a Tikka action and a Waters magazine that allows 2.6 inch OAL .
It’s a bit unfair to compare the 6x45 to the GT and bigger cartridges because your not comparing apples with apples.
Mine throws a 85gr Sierra hpbt at 2865 fps and is a handy combo that will level a lot of things at sensible ranges .
Here’s an old photo showing a Berger 87 gr and you can see how a long magazine is almost essential if you want to use 80gr plus projectiles in my opinion .

Would think cartridges like this have been made redundant by 6ARC.
I built one on a mini-mauser action.
I only use Sierra 70gn hp projectiles and they fit the mini mauser mag fine .
No idea on velocity but things fall over when shot with it and thats good enough for me.
Yes, but I don't want to have to butcher the bolt face on the .223 and don't particularly want to buy a new rifle. I'd think the model 7 mag might be the limiting factor though but I haven't yet measured it (can't remember length of it)Quote:

I'm not sure there's any real advantage over the .223. In a constrained mag where you can't shoot any high BC 6mm bullets it may be worse than .223 in reality

Shoots great, 75 Hp at 3100 ish, 80 Blitz at 2900, 85 g at 2850, seams to kill goats and fallow just fine.
For any given weight, it should be a 100 fps faster than a .223,
I’ve had mine for ten plus years. Few kills racked up now.
Not sure if there as any real gain, over the fast twist .223 now, weren’t very common when I got mine,
6PPC, 6 ARC, 6x47Rem, all slightly better performance, but expensive Brass, .223 brass is pennies on the dollar.
I like mine, and would be one of my last hunting rifles to go.
Having said that, I would love a Fast twist .22 PPC or 22 ARC, cover a lot of the same ground, as the small sub .243 6mm ground, with cheaper .22 cal high bc bullets.

Sure the BC of the Sierra's isn't as flash as Hornady .224 ELDM but it doesn't matter up to 300m.

Thanks for the input folks, looking at availability of dies etc I will probably be better off just getting a faster twist .223 barrel if it doesn't end up .300blk.
Had a number of both, and basically inside 300yds arguing the merits of either is just ballistic masturbation…. There’s no practical on game difference. Assuming of course you are comparing to a fast twist 223
The 223 is the easy cheap option.
I ran a competition 224 Valkyrie for a while but it only gave about 100 fps more with 80s and 88s over a 223, that with its poor feeding habits (yes magazines can be tuned but even then there are the occasional issues, always at the worst time) was enough to put me off.
A guy here had a Ruger Ranch (16") in 22 ARC at the range the other day. Nice enough rifle, felt good. It fed OK but wasn't smooth feeding like the 223 from the same "STANAG" magazine setup. It shot quite nicely with factory ammo, but heck Hornardy ELD--VT 62s were only doing 2980, hardly anything over a 223 . . . .
One plus for the 6x45 over 223 is bullet weight. I've shot these 105gr Speers out of mine, which would be a great bush slug.
