    A 7mm what?

The weekly Bronco's mailer has a staggeringly expensive Savage rifle in a chambering I've never heard of.

    https://broncos.co.nz/product/savage...ftware#1139086

What to make of all this malarkey. First I waste an hour trying to figure out Ruger's latest quirky weirdness and now I'm gonna sit here and do the same exercise but on Savage.

Yeah a new calibre a bit like the 277 fury, the new US military round. Steel case that cam handle 20k psi more than normal. Military use is for short barrel but with long barrel performance.
Keep the long barrel and have more

Good to know that the 21st century is reaching nz... albeit slowly.

For hunting this will be a competitor to 7prc (with some advantages and disadvantages). will be interesting to see it unfold.

Bo doubt some old farts will bitch&moan because its not a 270...

There was a review recently in the "Backfire" youtube channel on this chambering.

Would it be an improvment on a rem mag that's loaded with high BC projectiles ?

    Yes watched that this morning.

The side by side comparison with the other 7mm cartridges (old and new) certainly gets the attention. The move to fast twist barrels has unlocked decent gains, and even more YouTube sponsorship opportunities! Win! Wins everywhere!

So basically a magnum in a 5lb rifle? Sounds fun to shoot! Though I guess someone who buys it will stick a 2lb scope on it, which will help with recoil...

I'm guessing you can't reload steel cases either? And do they sell the ammo for it?

Yes they can be reloaded with specific dies ( they did not specify how many times, I assume at least 2 to make it kind of worth it?), but good luck getting the same performance out of standard powder. The powder in these cartridges is proprietary and special and unobtainable for the moment.

And the current crop of military rifles chambering this new flash Harry round are not enthralled with the rifle's performance. I imagine it may be around the pressure management of hither-to unheard of pressures.

A week or so ago from Federal.

Can't be long until we hear if other cartridges might be available in peak alloy. 5.56 was demonstrated beginning of the year.

There's been quite a few new cartridges the last couple of years and I've only been catching up on them the last few weeks. Lots of interesting YT and load data, but you do have to sift through a lot of crap as well.

It strikes me there's been consistent incremental improvements, with improved long for calibre cartridges and faster twist barrels being brought to market in tandem with lots of funky new stocks and colours and go faster stripes, all sorts. Then there's the incredible development of all-copper projectiles at both ends of the velocity spectrum. Straight walled cartridges are still being developed and now we have a step change in cartridge pressures with Sig Fury and this Federal 7mm Backcountry.

The problem as I see it is rifles chambered in these funky new options are either unobtanium, the components are unobtanium, or if you can actually put one together for a reasonable sum, the cost (and availability) of the reloading components can be eye-wateringly expensive. Like American made subsonic hunting bullets for example. So experimenting with different components is difficult, and I like experimenting but not at any cost.

I'm looking at having a safe clear-out sometime maybe next year and selling a few and getting a couple of new ones. A dedicated subsonic hunter and a proper S Island tops hunter. Had some sage inputs from forum members Friwi and Pommy about the subsonic options and it got me thinking, really the one and maybe only company that reliably delivers projectiles and cases and partners with rifle makers to mass produce new chamberings, is Hornady. Creedmoor, ARC, PRC, Marlin Express, Ruger, others, they introduce the cartridge and Howa or Ruger makes the rifle, and the others follow along. Then there's all their new projectiles.

So it'll probably be Everyman Hornady for me in the end, an ARC and a PRC most probably. Keep it simple.

Ok, so at least they are providing the data and are demonstrating can be reloaded and only difference appears to be need to flare the case mouth - which I do for cast bullets anyway...

I have to admit, each time I see a new cartridge come out lately, I wonder about the future of it.
Is it a marketing exercise to make a few bucks, or is it a genuinely good idea that will serve shooters well.

For every cartridge that becomes a classic like 223/243/270, I bet a fair few quietly shuffle off into irrelevance.
