At the risk of starting WWIII on calibres - what's your experience with the SAUM's for hunting ? like to hear the good and bad, if any. And if you were going to build one what action would u start with.

I like mine, a Model 7. I would use a rem 700 sa. Mill it out a bit so you can seat the projectiles out. I use 140gr accubond as a mag length load and single feed 162 amax for long range.
Proper 7saum brass is hard to get but Norma 300 SAUM can be necked down easily enough.

I too love mine in Model 7 also. I run the 162 Amax at 2990 fps (single feed as way too long for the M7 magazine seated at just touch OAL.) It shoots very well indeed. Agree with Stug to build on an action that you could run the 160 class pills at a decent OAL and mag fit. 700SA or if you like Tikka's, a T3. A Sako 85 finnlite in 7mm SAUM would be real nice i reckon.

One reason i love the SAUM is because its just a bit different, but the easy option is to just buy the rifle you want in 7RM.

thanks guys -I was guessing the REM700 would be better for a build for reasons you've stated. Most 2nd hand saums that turn up seem to model 7's, hence the build question.
Would u start with a wsm as donor action or can you go with a standard REM700 SA and get bolt face opened up ?
243 & 7mmRM - got em in the safe already

The latest rem model 7 comes in 300 wsm and has a magnum boltface, so just a barrel change.

Tikka T3 in 270wsm is just a barrel change as well.

Rem mountain rifle is a bolt face, feed rails, mag and barrel change.

Any rem SA in 7 mm or 300wsm is just a barrel change.

The tikka will be lightest followed by the rem 7 then the mountain rifle.

Heavy rifles tend to stay in the safe when climbing big hills or doing 10 hr walks.

I have had three 7 saums so far one model 7 one rem 700 short action and one on a fin light, I am currently in the process of building my fourth, they are my favourite caliber for a general hunting rifle.

I have a tikka t3 7 rem mag that will be for sale soon that would make a good saum if Tikkas are your thing

Yep, you're damn right on that score. Hence my interest.
Have a couple of aftermarket REM700 SA stocks sitting around ...... just need to find the REM700 action.
