    I have a tikka 300wsm - 19” barrel shooting 165gr @ 2993fps

Breaked suppressor so very manageable recoil, not spot your shots manageable, but still an awesome rifle & cartridge.

But saying that - if I was a reloader -I’d have gone for a 7wsm/saum or 6.5prc as the factory offerings on these arnt great which is the main reason for a 300wsm.

I can’t comment on the 7saum, but I have a 20inch 300wsm and have shot fellow, reds, chammy, tahr and sambar with it and can’t complain on its stopping power at all. I use 165 TGK projectiles through it at about 3k fps it just works. I don’t think the animals will notice the difference which ever path you decide.

Up to 160-170 grain projectiles the 7's are superior.
With heavier projectiles the 30's take over.

The 195gr Sierra TMK or the 208gr Hornady ELDM's are sledge hammers in the 300 WSM. Another interesting recent choice is the 212gr Barnes LR bore rider projectile. As per the Mitre 10 advert - BIG IS GOOD!

    True, but none of the 1700m+ 230+ grain-shooting 30 cal's I have seen are man-portable

    So what?
The OP was enquiring about a six hundred yard twenty inch barrel rifle.
I would think such a rifle would be reasonably portable.

So it’s sounding like 7saum is the way to go ballistics & fitting a short action wise.
What about reloading components availability? 7mm’s seem to be like ford rangers these days, every man & his dog has one

30 cal projectiles & WSM brass is everywhere. 7mm SAUM brass can be very difficult to find at times. If you go that route make sure you have a good stock of brass.

I own my own outfitting business, guiding most big game in NZ.

I’d love to go hunting for myself sometime… I can’t recall the last time I’ve squeezed the trigger

My client and I on a wilderness chamois rut hunt this year. The 7mmSAUM took 12 animals with this group of 4 hunters. Distance from 100y to 560y on a variety of big game

7mm -6.5prc looks to be pretty efficient too
    Or how about 300 saum?
A bit less powder/recoil and in a short action, not that it would matter in a tikka action
