Advice for a new scope for my safe Queen...

Hi Guys,

I'm currently wrestling for options for a Target / Tops new scope to place atop my 7mm Rem Mag safe Queen.

With buying a bush gun a AAC 300 Blackout (when they arrive in January) I hope my close up and roar stuff will be sorted and i'm gonna put my current Leupold CDS 3-9x40 atop that and this then clears the way for me to utilize the big girl as a long range / target and tops gun for some missions next year.

Currently I'm looking very closely at the Sightrons (S3 8-32x56 and S3 6-24x50) as they seem to be from a couple of suppliers in NZ around that magic $1500 mark that seems really good value. Have looked at buying online but tend to run into issues with the export controls out of the States. I'm also looking to throw a rail atop and would be interested in the best rings to use. I've currently got a set of mid Warne's but that will obviously likely change with the height change

I've also had on my target 22 a Vortex crossfire 2 6-20 which is extremely good to use and I love the magnification for indoor use. Did look at the vorex razor but looked a little pricey in NZ.

Any other suggestions? (he say's ducking for cover!!!):D

Cool I am looking for the same thing, so far I have spent the week researching and not getting very far, seems these days no one is doing real reviews any more.

The sightron's pricing seems fairly keen and the ones I have seen/used were pretty good. I like the mil/mil.

I like the size and the low to high range, 50mm seems well big enough but as an optic the reviews dont seem quite so hot.

Leopold has a new scope VX6 but that is close to $2kUS and just wee bit too much for me.

On my 7mm rem mag I used a Leupold VIII 4.5-14x40 LR. Shot out to 630yds with it no problems. Two friends have weaver grandslam 4.5-14 x 40 on their 7mm mags. I wouldn't get the 8-32x, but the 6-24x would be good.

Mind you its getting pretty hard to sieve the shit from the clay when you go out and do reviews especially when they don't reveal who and where their allegiances are - makes it bloody hard - hence I thought I'd ask the GC's on this site.

Stug - as always good advice - of the two I was looking the same way as the bigger one just seemed like overkill and heavier to lug into the southern Alps hopefully next year it was really in there in case I just became a desk riding paper puncher!!! :ORLY:

Nice notes about the Weaver Grandslam and Leupold. I'm sorry but I feel Leupolds losing its way a bit in its newer items (and Price point for what you get) Although I know in a lot of shooters dependability as a component of the mind game can be really important.

I would recommend the sightron s3. Just get the 6-24 you wont need amymore then that.

Good glass too and cheap enough to buy in nz. ded stocks them. Have one on my 338rum

got a sightron s3 6-24 as well, dialled up and down all around on the weekend about 40 ish times and still tracking true. if you want i can send u some pics

Pay to check in China. Bearing in mind that almost all scopes are contracted out to Chinese firms. You can get knockoffs or the genuine article. The big plus is that there are no hassles with customs and no duty unless the item is over $400 bucks. From what i can see there are a few options with illum, FFP and different reticles too... Any stand out as better or equally don't go there options?

I have the MOA and find it useful especially for correcting windage

This will come in under 1500 might have a little more gst to pay but...

The one I have shot is 1/4MOA clicks, however if I read right 1/10th mil = 1/3inch MOA at 100yds so I dont see how its a biggee? its just a different factor?

One thing I do recall however is the std lens caps were utter crap, and fell off and then apart.

the sightron flip caps are shit, despite the salesman going on how great they were.

and no , mils or moa click make no difference for correcting windage as long as you know how to do it properly

Interested also in your rings and bases are they Optilocks and if so Hi ones or those burris Zee ones with the rubber inserts that give you a bit of wiggle room to play with? Interested as I'd thought I'd need to go down the road of a 20moa rail or similar on my Tikka ??

ahhhh..... not sure what height in terms of medium/high but the distance between the action and the bottom of the scope is 10mm.

they are 30mm sako optilocks though, I was thinking of a rail but if you have a tikka I would get talleys. with a rail you have more opportunity for things to move, but in some cases your only option. luckily the scope fitted with those optilocks as you can see the front bell is fairly close to the barrel with the scope caps on!

Went and had a play with the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 yesterday at Reloaders. And I have to say impressed! Glass looks about the same as the Sightron (which makes sense both being sourced from Japan).

Interestingly was really taken with the Illum provided on the Reticule and that they have a first and second focal plane option in both EBR 1 and EBR 2c in MilR and MOA options.

The eye relief seemed a bit more in the Vortex than the Sightron and my eye seemed to adjust to it a bit quicker (But, maybe thats 'cause I already have a similar Crossfire on my 22lr) and I understand the AO minimum is a bit further out by 10yards (at 50) in the Vortex.

The other thing is a ability to shim to create effectively a Zero stop for the scope (and shim is included). Drawback they still persist with those naff plastic covers in the box (not a biggie) and comes in or under the magic $1300 of the Sightron. Why the hell don't they just change it to a branded neoprene cover - so much easier!!!

Anyway interested as I know there are a few of you out there with this scope for your feedback - thoughts?? It's become such a toss up...

I have a tikka 7mm RM and should have my s3 6-24 in a few days (a mate brought it back from the states for me)

Plan A is to put some 30mm optilocks on, so will let you know how I get on. If not it looks like I'll be getting some talleys

I went with the MOA reticle with MOA clicks. Thought long and hard about getting a MilDot with MRAD clicks, but stuck to what I am more familiar with

MILs is pretty easy to get used to. I run both MILs and MOA on two different rifles (not ideal) but it doesn't present too much difficulty to swap between them. Next scope will continue to be MILs from now on I think though.

BTW, Are there any issues with importing scopes from the USA?

I believe the biggest issue is high magnification scopes fail the export criteria - I remember seeing it somewhere (I think the conditions of sale for US auction sites and was it Optics planet?)

No. Done it plenty.

Unless your matching the power with the quality(money) I don't think it's a wise buy.
At 16 power the vortex is ok but not as great as it could be. But then again it's not a nightforce or a Swaro or a Leica.
But for shooting paper it is plenty and for shooting deer it is too much which is toooo much for me. 2c.

Was interesting talking to a couple of the competitors last weekend. A couple of them mentioned they never got their scope above about 12x for the medium range shoot (targets from 100m to 600m). Personally I shoot a 6-24x56mm scope and I have mine on about 10x unless in a solid supported prone shot then It gets cranked up to about 18x. Only really use the 24x at the longer ranges where I have a good solid shooting position (i.e. target never leaves the scope under recoil) and I won't have to transition to another target quickly.

So @Gilie can I assume then you're more likely to use a FFP scope rather than guesstimate the hashes and holdovers for the different magnifications? and MOA or Mil?

These days i am using a FFP scope but i have previously used a 4.5-18x50mm that was MOA and SFP. I have never had much problem with FFP vs SFP as i dial the windage and hold the correction for a follow up shot.

Sure FFP and MIL would be my recommendation but i think with practice you'll be fine with MOA and SFP :)
