After market Stock for Howa Mini Action?

    Hey guys,

Ive just aquired a Howa Mini in 6.5 Grendel to have a play around with.

A cool little action but I greatly dislike the big wide chunky stocks they have on them. I see on some of the US sites guys are doing some pretty neat jobs of slimming the factory stock down and painting etc. reducing some weight but more importantly for me improving the feel and look of the stock.

Boyds do various stocks inletted for the Howa Mini, and i see Brownells do a nice looking walnut stock for them as well.

I had a feeling that i'd seen on here at some point, someone (maybe Wellington based) that had made some light weight Carbon stocks for the Howa Mini.

I'd be quite keen on getting in one of the timber stocks from Brownells, or does anyone know if theres anything else available from anywhere?

Im picking i cannot just place the order for the stock from Brownells and wait for it to turn up on my door step anymore either?

Google Boyds Stocks NZ. You can support the local agent with confidence. They explain the process on their website. Easy as and their prices are really good.

FRST on the forum manufactures a nice carbon stock - I reckon your refering to him.

That horrible stock really puts me off the howa mini. A nice walnut one would be great.

What are the logistics of ordering a stock from Brownells? I have also been looking for a lighter weight alternative stock option for the Howa Mini.
I would be curious as to whether a lightweight barrel profile would like in a Standard or Heavy profile inletting, and how much wieght this would save?

Easy enough at the brownells end IF the manufacturer is registered for export and the stock is less than US$100. Just order and pay. Otherwise you will need a $250US export permit. Should hit NZ within a week.

Now the problems start. Before ordering you will need an NZ Import permit from NZ Police. No real problem. Takes a couple of weeks.

When the stock is stopped by NZ Customs be prepared for a long wait while they process the backlog. When they finally find it, they will contact you for your permit that you then send up. Customs then release the stock and you have to pick up or arrange for a courier to pick up from the mail centre as NZ Post deem "gun parts" to dangerous to deliver.

Once you finally get your stock and signed off permit you then have you notify the police of the import and then they sign of the permit.

Thats basically the Post April 2019 process.

So not a fun process! That definitely makes the Boyd Stocks supplier in NZ a much more viable option.
Having to add $250 USD export permit to a $220 USD stock from Barnells, doesn't seem like such a great idea anymore.

Provided you have the NZ Import Permit in you hands, can you walk the stock across the border? Ie, someone travelling back from the US to NZ?

Broncos outdoors in tauranga had a prototype chassis for howa mini advertised a couple of months ago. 500grams too. Not sure if they have hit the market yet or not

Yeah that all sounds like a pain in the arse alright, i figured as much.

I think i will get an import permit, give it to my mate who travels to the US all the time and get him to bring one back in his luggage, just as he has other stuff.

I shortened up the factory magazine today, to get it flush fitting to the bottom 'metal'.

Also shortened the mag release lever to help prevent accidentally dropping out the mag.

Huge improvement over the factory setup in my opinion.

It fits 3 Grendel rounds in the mag and works perfectly.

If I trim up the internals a bit more I could prob fit 4.

Ergonomically so much nicer to carry in the hand now without the long mag extending out.
