Question chaps, I’ve been offered an Alpine rifle in 308
I understand they’re English, contemporary with Parker Hale and Churchill.
Mauser M98 action.
Anyone had one and can comment ?

Won’t let me edit it, should read Alpine brand rifle, sorry
Yup think you are pretty right.
Like a parker-hale mauser.
Just cant remember if they are better or worse finish wise.
Think I remember @gundoc commenting on them ages ago.
One is a bit more naff than others
It's still a sporterised mauser so at the end of the day if you are happy with the price and finish then it probably ok.
Mate had one. Not as well finished as the Parker Hales of the same era. I didn't think much of it but then he traded a nice BSA for it.
I seem to recall some gun smiths wouldn't/won't work on them.
Don't know if my recall is functioning that well or why they wouldn't work on them. Could be talking shit.
Gundoc may be best to comment again.
A quick Google and there are a few commets about high quality. That's not what I recall of mate's rifle.
if price is right..and your happy with it..GO FOR IT.... at worst it will be spare/wet day/loan rifle and its got to be pretty bad before its no good as bush rifle.
handled a few of them over the years and they werent too bad....better than a beat up old SMLE for comparable price.
It will be fine just like the Parker Hale rifles most of us over 60 were bought up on, BSA if you had a few more quid. is it a 7x57?
Nope, 308
The Alpines were a low budget rifle built on old M98 milsurp actions. They were fairly cheap and you got what you paid for. Parker Hales were a definite step up with their milsurp M98 actions, and their later models with the new commercial actions were better still but still not up to BSA standards. If the Alpine is dirt cheap and has a decent barrel it will work OK.
They were sold as kit rifles as I understand and the skill/professionalism level that they were put together is the determining factor to how good they are.
Some are rubbish so if the pros weigh in it might save you a headache

Can't be getting sold for much, so probably worth a punt. Huge fan of the M98 system. As long as the bores good...
