    Am I being a dick?

Need some guidance from the forum.

I just bought a tidy 2nd hand sporterised Brno M98 in 30-06AI. It came with Weaver bases and 30mm rings.

I got it home, swapped the rings out & set up my leupold M8 scope and noticed the scope and the barrel were noticeably misaligned. As in i don’t have enough windage to accomodate it.

I contacted the shop this morning and advised them of the issue. I sent these photos in.

I mentioned that a Leupold windage base would probably sort it as it fits the same screw centres. They have come back and said they have them in stock and that I can come and pick them up for $45.

Should I be paying for this, what do you think?

I’ve also had a barreled action project with these guys for what must be a year now, a pretty simple turn the barrel down and install some Recknagel open sights. They lost the original job description, so I talked them that through again...

I have to drive 3 hrs return to see them so I’m a bit hesitant to ‘go & pick them up’.

Take the gun back for a refund, pick up your project as well and go somewhere else.

No you should not be paying for it. No, you should not have to wait for all that time for a simple job etc etc.

But this is NZ, so it just depends on whether they like you or not. Maybe find someone who likes you more.

If you really like the rifle just do the windage thing but get your project gun back at the same time. It is a secondhand rifle and a bit of care on your part would have prevented the oversight that they probably werent aware of either. If it shits you to tears then ask for a refund.

Dont know whether or not you fired it yet; but; many years ago I purchased a brand new Bruno 7*57. The third shot jammed brass and couldnt extract. On close inspection the barrel was misaligned with the reciever. My money was refunded and I purchased a new rifle of different brand as there were no more Bruno available in that calibre at the time. I think your rifle has a serious falt and you should get a full refund.

It looks like the screw holes for the rear base are out of alignment?
If thats the cause and the dealer didn't do the drilling and tapping I personally wouldn't be expecting them to put it right (though many dealers probably would). Secondhand you have to accept some risk, even through a dealer, different story if its a new rifle.

I would be asking them nicely to send you the bases free of charge, if they refuse I would buy them elsewhere.

They are unlikely to have known, but the previous owner would have, offer a compromise if you really like the thing, they send you the bases or you give it back as not fit for purpose and your return costs are billable. You are on the legal high ground, but how much do you like this outfit?, so far enough to tolerate unreasonable delay on a project job.

It looks like the very back one is out of line with the other back one as well.
That would piss me off and if you ever want to sell it, it may come back to bite you.

try turning one of the rings around the other way.......it makes a difference.... lovely scope that SHOULD fit like a glove. piss poor service that should be sorted at no charge ASAP.

Is permanent plugging and re-tapping the best option? Seems in good condition otherwise

Even that isn't clear cut - if the original rings lined up okay(ish). I'm assuming it had rings since the OP said they swapped the rings.

I would hope for the sake of $45 the dealer would sort it, especially since to them it's probably only $25.
