Another Lever Action thread question. Wanted to avoid thread drift

Though I would start this as a new thread rather than engage in further drift.

My son is going to have to hand back his Ruger he got last last year and is looking to replace it with a lever.
Used for Plinking, with mates in Forestry and private access land. (Not used for hunting)

Ammo needs to be cheap and available. (he does not reload yet. May have to buy him some Trail boss and a basic kit)
Low intensity so he dose not have to stop after 5 rounds to let it cool down (ie my Sav 99 gets real hot after 5 shots)
Possibly some Cowboy action shooting at the Hamilton Pistol club he has been visiting if he decides to join.
Short Carbine length. 16" ??
Able to take scope or his existing red dot.
He like's the Brass look of the Henry and likes the Octagonal Barrel but neither is necessary.
S/S would be good. (my suggestion to him)
Wood Stock not Plastic.
Budget subject to buy back scheme but up to $2k

My question is which Lever Action and which Caliber and Why?.
He dose not want a BAR. Probably can't get a Sav 99 in a Low intensity Cartridge short of buying a 30/30 and re-barreling to sav 38-55 or .375win)
We're familure with the Savage and BAR good and bad points.

So what about Winchester 94 Can you even get them.

Mossberg 464
Rossi Puma
Chippa 1892 in say 44/40

45/70 to expensive to run as is the 44 mag.
45 Colt
357 gives option of using 38 as well
30/30 $1.57-$175 shot.
Any Levers actions in 223, 7.62x39, 9x19 ??

Lots of ideas so how about some thoughts more so on which Rifle

Marlin 1894 in .357 or a Rossi in .357.

Rossi around $600 - $900 depending on new or used for a stainless one.

But if you buy a stainless one for cowboy action shooting, you will be looked at as strange.

Marlins are much more expensive. There were some horrible ones that came out of the Remington factory when they moved the production line to Remington.

Apparently they are much better now, but still three times the price of a Rossi.

Some blrs due to land soon in 223 .

Rossi's have just landed and have gone up from the importers . Expect them to be 1200 ish now

hehe have to tell the boy he will get strange looks if he goes S/S for the cowboy shooting.
I forgot BLR's came in 223, Old boy down the road from me has one now I'm reminded of it. (Son dose not want a BLR as I had suggested that to him as well)

Keep your eyes open for a model 94AE (angle eject) Trapper on here and TM, and for plinking etc reload with trail boss and shooternz’s cast bullets. I haven’t tried my 30-30 ones yet but the 308s were damn nice to shoot and the barrel didn’t even get warm.

If you want to shoot cowboy, you need a ten round mag tube, unless your happy to reload mid run. So that puts you into pistol calibres with 20” barrel. So you might aswell pick a calibre that you can also shoot in a revolver that way you can simplify your reloading and avoid ammo mix ups. If I had $2k to spend I’d be looking at a uberti 1873 carbine which has a 20” octagon barrel, in either 357/38 or 45LC

rossi 357.... easy to shoot...plenty of ammo about...will be even cheaper when start to reload....can take a deer up close...will take a red dot mounted forward of action....

The 73 is the smoothest most perfect tube mag lever action ever if its any help

does 44-40 work or it it too long, and not available.
Years back family used to have one so have listen to old stories.

The ‘73 comes in 44-40 also. Few more options for revolvers in 45LC and 357/38 which is why I mentioned those

With the short stroke kit they are very slick and fast, I like them
