Thread: Anyone got a chopped and suspressed semiauto, Rem 7400, 742 or a bar.

Just picked up a Rem742 semi auto 6mm,
Think I would like to suppress it, and get an overall length of 20-21" or so with a DPT or similar.
Has anyone done so, to their semi centerfire.

I had a Browning 308 Shorttrac that I had HRE suppress ( was the first one he had done ) Dan did a really good job of the fitting / crown & regulating the gas system.

It cycled & shot awesome for a few years, but while sighting in before a gong shoot it broke & spat out one of it's action / slider bars ( had broken clean in half ) had it repaired & it worked fine after. But is something to be aware of, The extra blow back through the gas system can be very hard on the action.

Have one of the early BAR's supressed, never have had a problem with it. Originally wanted to do a left hand Short trac but the gunsmith wasn't keen, stating the action arms could be a problem like stated in previous reply. Not as robust as the early steel receiver BAR's. Would be a bit cautious of the 742.

We tend to skip the bar, specially the alloy ones, as said above their gas system is not designed for a suppressor.

The 6 mm Rem is a neat calibre but if you chop it you'll have taken away its edge over a .243 Win.

maybe just enjoy the rifle for what it is.

The multiple locking lugs of the 742 are notorious for cutting into the reciever at the back of the bolt stroke and causing the bolt to jam. The problem shows up when the rifle has done a fair few rounds. The problem is incurable at a realistic price and they are only suitable for parts afterwards. This was a design fault and was the reason for the development of the 7400 with its large locking lugs. The 7400 is a better rifle, but none of the semi-autos you mentioned are totally suitable for suppressed use if you want a long life from them.

The tried and true route for this is to suppress an AR with an adjustable gas block

With my BAR I have two pistons, change to the larger relief for the suppressor.

Dropped the gas bush size on my Ruger Mini 30 when I put a dpt can on it. Do a search for my thread on here somewhere if interested.

I stuffed up there, have 2 gas bleed off screws for the front of gas block, use the one with the larger hole for the suppressor.

I got my 243 Browning Shorttrac done last year by HRE, he did an awesome job just sent up the rifle and ammo and he did the rest. Haven't had any problems with it yet

As someone said the gas blow back is a lot more noticeable but overall it was worth it

I think, I will leave it as is, given that rifle, is no longer being manufactured, its functions, and shoots quite well, and isn't a very common cal.
Was thinking, it would have made a good little suppressed carbine, something I don't have, I will find, something more sensible to chop up and butcher.
