For the price I'm wondering if these are much good. Or are range finders a case of "buy once, cry once"?

Ideally I want to accurately range to about 500m.

I have an Ali Express golf range finder in my golf bag. It was around $60. It works pretty well. Lens are rubbish so I'd not think it will be very useful in low light. USB charge so could be an issue for extended use. It's very lightweight so I wouldn't think if it's very durable. I'm assuming your wanting this for hunting/shooting, and not golf.
I have a aliexpress snfway(?) And it seems alright. I would agree it's not the greatest in low light but I'm happy with it.
I'd be really keen to compare to a luepold or similar to see how different the 1 are.
