AR 15 Brass catcher - hunting

Hello - I'm a newbie to AR's but my 300 Blk is up and running, and hopefully will be out on the hill soon. I've looked at several commercial brass catchers and they look to be a total PIA for our hunting conditions . . . for a start I can't ever see me using more than a 5 shot magful for any of my hunting situations and usually it'll be 3 or less. However I would like to retrieve the brass

So - what do you use and how does it go in thick stuff (lawyer, bush, scrub etc) or for getting caught up in stuff (fences, vehicles etc) ??

At the moment I'm sorta thinking the baseball cap hack is the way to go.

    Cheers

Glue a tab of neoprene on the ejection port deflector, so the brass drops straight down at your feet.
Neoprene tab just needs to allow the dust cover to close without getting in the way.

I just let rip them pick em up after. My 300 sends them in a pretty uniform direction and the converted 223 brass is cheap as chips anyway.

Most of my cases are a little special so require forming & I'm not that keen on throwing them away, but in tight bush is a different story...

The simplest solution is simply to accept that you will lose some. I don't know if you reload yet, but if you do, you'll find that binning brass for various reasons is pretty normal. Some you get to keep, some you're gonna lose.

If you don't reload, can I suggest that you give the idea a look see. It will mean that you can make your own out of 223/5.56 brass which is really common.

My pick would be that if he wants to keep the brass, he wants to reload it.

I like to keep an eye on my brass.

Being just to the right of Greg while spotlighting wallabies and hares I really appreciated Greg's brass catcher!

That's a good point. It does help the AR's ability to fit in and play nicely with others. I have a burn scar high on my chest that looks like a quotation mark " due to a 223 case coming out of an AR and deciding that my shirt was a good place to land.

If you think the 223 is hot the bigger cases are worse,

The 6.5 CM upper I had melted a hole through my of my catch bags, some of the smaller cases sometimes shoot through the little hole in it
