Belmont 62gr FMJBT brass case or Barnaul FMJBT coated steel case - any thoughts on either of these two?
I've had pretty poor accuracy with both.
Who in hell shoots an AR 15 for accuracy...I thought the name of the game was to put as much lead one way and brass the other.
I struggled to hit the barn door I usually shoot at.
1/7
I use the Belmont in a 1/7 norinco ar and its fairly accurate for me out to 100 mtrs .... ....
About 50
Always looking for the perfect rifle, hope to find it one day
But to get the thread back on track- I have not had a lot of luck with the ammo the op has put up to choose between. Reloading is almost a must in my mind if you want good cheep ar fodder
For a wee bit more you can get Hornady Brass Training ammo, found this to be very accurate, compared to above brands mentioned 1/7 & 1/9 twist 16" barrels
Had some stoppages with the Barnaul, they may have been 5 shot magazines fault though as rifle seems to prefer big P Mags
From those two I've only tried the barnaul and it wasn't impressive. Had success with hornady 55gr training ammo and the trusty 50gr american eagle with a 14.5inch 1/7 barrel.

Does anyone do larger quantity deals on the hornady brass training ammo, or is it always around a dollar per round?
Yes seems to be around a buck a round dropping to around 90 c if buy by the 1000 from reloaders supplies, but you can keep all the brass(that you find) and save to reload one day if feel the urge?
Tried heaps of expensive heavy factory loads that all the magazine write ups say shoot "amazing", didn't find any better than 55gr Hornady apart from you get 20rds instead of 50 for the price!
I know a guy who swears by the American Eagle out of his CMMG
By my math this is under $0.80 a round and you could always hit him up for a deal if buying 1000+

AE .223 - the "AR" branded stuff.
Shoots f**kin' awesome out of my Windham Varminty thing with the fancypants barrel.
Cheap too. Think I paid $90 for the last 100 rounds.
I have tried lots of handloads and factory brands. Have always found the steel cased hornady was the best bang for buck accuracy wise. Fiocchi 55gr sp is good but pricey. The 62gr Belmont sprays. Barnaul sprays.
All good and will give the steel cased Hornaday a go
Thanks @jackson21
Once the AR is together I'll try the selection I have and then maybe look at others after verifying accuracy.
I have a box of the 62gr Belmont among others so will be interested to see how it goes.
Any of you rattle gun owners tryed Katipo?

Yes, I've shot katipo very unsuccessfully out of my ar. I hope to develop a hand load that can match the American Eagle out of my cmmg, its so accurate it just pinholes it. Have found seating depth to be the biggest definer of accuracy in my case, longer rounds seem to shoot better.
What CMMG do you have? I have a MK4 rce and if that ammo works well through it ill be a happy man.
Yeah I've got the rce with 1:7 twist. I've read that the american eagles are just vmax but still can't get vmax hand loads as accurate
Cheap hornady and copper coated projectiles only good enough for 3 gun but can get Berger and targex projectiles to group nicely.
Was worried at the start and if I hadn't found the ae223 rounds I'd have sent the gun back
Also recommend Hornady Brass ammo, about $50 per box of 50
Hornaday steel case ammo at 100m

@Spook next sight in day at the farm wanna join me and @Maca49 to see how good they really do shoot ??
No Waikato allowed at after function mind you !!
Sounds like a plan...when?...I have been guilty of buying Waikato lately, but only to curry favour with the natives in the interests of the hunting community...my tipple of choice these days seems to be Buffalo Bill.
Geeze sounds good, if all goes to plan I might be able to break your shoulders with a round out of a 500BPE double rifle, nice 50cal projectile! and 3" brass
Should I bring a barn door then ?? Maybe @Spook has a spare one ? Cheeky prick I know. Could fix that bent .17 for ya though  Put the scope on it !!
Hi All.
I have used the Belmont 55g nickeled steel case ammo in both my 20" RRA 1in 9 and my 16" DD 1in 7 barrelled, home put together. The RRA shoots well under one minute and the other is about one point two M/A. The 16" has a 4 power scope with rounded top post and would account for the opening of groups. Barnaul is crap. Hornady is good.
Haven't tried the Belmont 63g.
prices?
I think gunworks on TM does a sampler of 5 each to try to see what works for you, I am tempted to get it to try (when I get an AR) but its such pain in the ass to get a police form for 20~25rounds.
