hi guys ,there seem to be a few ATN night vision scopes available at the mo , are they any good ,opinions either way would be great. i have a pulsar hd38 thermal viewer which is awesome for finding animals but as soon as we flick the light on they are off . before you jump up and down about spotlighting i have access to a few private farms that have rabbit and hare problems and night shooting seems to work at them .. cheers sig

ATN x-sight one and 2 are good but heavy and chew thru batteries but very good otherwise. I have repaired a few and usually its s--t quality sd cards that are stuck inside and cheap batteries corroding out.
ATN 4K x-sight have far better battery life, only repaired one and didnt really play with it too much
@Sarvo . yep good bang for your buck but not as robustly made as an ATN

i wouldnt say the ATN is military grade, i dont know of any military that uses one either.
but it has allot of trick features such as gps logging position and recording when you shoot so if a ranger accuses you of poaching you have video evidence of where the deer etc was taken.
you can also link in from a smart phone by blutooth and have your hunting mate look down the scope at the same time.
Had one, too heavy for a hunting rifle. Batteries guaranteed to go flat at worst moments.... Lived on the 22 for a while videoing possum shooting
The sighting in method was quite effective with reticle.
Replaced with a hand held thermal and a Maxtorxh!
Spent some time reviewing ATN kit online. My conclusion from that was it seemed to be a mixed bag with enough disappointed buyers to make me think twice.
Is a bit hard to filter through bought/fake reviews online these days though however. But it was enough to make me decide that route wasn't worth it.
I was interested in the Pard units. Seem popular over in the UK, not looked through one at all though. There Chinese made and seemed to have pretty good reviews in the UK.

I see owl's got an ATN unit too, i'd expect he should give a pretty fair assessment of where they stand in the scheme of things.
I had an ATN X-sight 2. With the extra battery pack all up it was around 2kg on the rifle. Worked ok but gets old when walking around shooting, just ask @Padox.Quote:

good replies guys . now you have me thinking on a pard007,then i can float it around a couple of rifles,. decisions decisions ,decisions. keep at me with atn vs pard
The pard is far superior to the atn after playing with @Joe_90 1 a few times
I highly recommend looking in to the Pard 008+ - Hands down they're way better than the ATN's. Better software/interface, user friendly, clear to look through, full HD recording, compact and not a giant submarine on your rifle, 1 shot zero yada yada.

ATN or American Technologies Night Vision are actually made in the ex Communist block but sometimes tubed with American intensifiers. I have an older Crusader Gen2+ scope amongst my Night Gear and it has the American MX9916 tube which is actually Gen2 , The tube was the reason I bought it for my son.
A dedicated riflescope will usually give better accuracy than a clip on. That said some are good with no shift in point of aim. It can be a bit of luck of the draw with clip on scopes. After many years using and importing Night gear I have found Goggles and a dedicated riflescope hard to beat. I have never seen the Pard equipment but have heard good things about it. My personal kit is all Gen3 so have never bothered with Digital or thermal, I have enough $$$ invested in it now.
If you are using thermal then switching to the rifle I would recommend you go to a dedicated NV scope and rifle set up so it would be the Pard 008 for me if your thinking is the 007 or 008.

I shouldn't have read this thread, how much is the Pard 007? Can it be used as a handheld device until you clip it onto your scope?
now for those interested i'm going to give a very simple version of how NV works:
digital nv is basically a camera at the objective end, some electronics and a tv screen at the ocular end.
"tube nv" is completely different. imagine a normal scope but...behind the objective end is a plate that is charged up to a high negative voltage. at he ocular end a plate thats charged to a positive voltage then more lenses etc.
a small amount of light enters and makes electrons want to leave the front plate, they fly down to the ocular plate as its positively charged/ this plate then releases light towards the eye.
however there is a gain between light input to light output and very basically this is how it works.
ok, thats really simplified but just to give you all an idea

I currently have 3 ATN NV scopes. One of each model.
I recent got a 4K Pro and it's certainly the better of the 3. The other two are X-Sight 2 HD and X-Sight HD - both 5-20x. Both of these are for sale if anyone is looked. The X-Sight 2 is on TradeMe at the moment of $1050 and the older one can go for $550. These both have the orginally supplied IR Lamps. BUt would recommend upgrading these to some better. Have take a range of picture the other night at home, all with the same IR Lamp. Some pictures below:

As mentioned, the battery life on the earlier ATN was a bit shit, but that's becase they run off 4x AA. So depends on the quality of what you put in it. Unto 2 hours with Lithium. But I run a external USB power pack in a stock pack with mine. The 4K is magic for battery life!!!

I notice the comment about "Illuminators ... THAT animals CANNOT see". Does this mean the built in illuminator is partially visible?
850nm which is what it comes with and want most IR torches are create that red glow that we can see at the torch - 850 can be seen by animals its towards the end of their visible spectrum - they may not react though, rabbits don't seem to care (commercial hunters are using the 008) - deer may; or they may just ignore it (don't flash it around) or as in one clients case the look straight him to be shot between the eyesQuote:

905 that I've tested on pigs can't be seen during my tests, including one at 60m with the laser focused on its head didn't - until the 308 pill smacked into it
940 certainly can't be seen - tried that on farm deer
Depends on the animals too - also lower power levels, don't flash it around (this is any IR torch, not just the pard)
well ive bitten the bullet and a 007 is on its way.weighed up pros and cons and being able to shift it between bang sticks was the decider. now a little boy waits
