    Barrel fluting

Hey all, thinking about fluting my rem 700 sporter and rather than trolling the net thought id ask real word.

Who has had this done ?
Did it affect accuracy will be on a new rifle.

    Cheers

It wont affect accuracy or weight. It will affect your wallet! It is more cosmetic than effective and is expensive.

I had gunworks do my model 7 7saum heavy profile factory barrel.

Didn't effect the way it shoots. Looks cool, minimal weight saving, but a few little things do add up.

At the same time I had the bolt fluted, bolt handle skeletonised with alloy knob fitted.

Also fitted Stug CF stock, all up lost 2 lbs, but the lion share of that was the stock.

It can affect accuracy in some cases. Probably more dependant on the method of rifling. Shilen for example advises against it; they use the button rifling method. Most hunting rifle barrels are hammer forged though so possibly okay. Of course, it depends on the skill of the gunsmith too.

If the fluting was done by the barrel maker at the time of production then it would be properly stress relieved. My Sako .308 Black Bear is fluted (they come like that) and is extremely accurate.

There is one reputable gunsmith that advises on his website not to do it in most cases and gives his reason why. he'll still do it but looks like he'll talk you out of more often than not. Most barrels don't actually like the fluting if you know what I mean.

He's also known for going on forums and pretending to be someone else and putting down other gunsmiths work...

I always thought if you really want a fluted barrel, just buy a fluted barrel, or a gun with a fluted barrel. The cost of fluting an existing barrel is definitely not worth what you are getting out of it plus it may upset the heat treatment and/or stress levels and/or original finish.

Yes, cherish that bull barrel if that is what you start out with, except you could shorten it to lose some weight without much disadvantage.

Yes pretty poor form signing in under different user names to run down a competitors product

Can be quite damaging in the small firearms industry both locally & internationally, especially when you get caught....

Still loved his rant about dpt “ruining” things for everyone with their pricing (I.e. a product everyone wanted at a good price). How dare they!

Well if you can make sufficent margin to keep growing your business (and your product is good enough) why not. Commonality of components and interchangeably is what makes for a good design, lower mnf costs and better sales simple really.

Now I've posted about said gunsmith re:fluting, I'm trying to find which one I was referring to. I cant remember and a little OCD has kicked in. I went straight to the one I thought it was and it doesn't look like it was him bugger lol
Edit: A bit quick to put myself down there. I didn't look in the right place on the website. I did have it right first time.
If this is the same guy some of you people are referring to then that is a pretty crook thing to do. If you have the balls to put someone else's work down do it face to face and not under a different name and in social media. Not very professional.
