Barrel threading for suppressor

I am going to buy an ASE SL5i suppressor for my Tikka 260, I'm thinking of going for a M14x1 thread.
Am I right in thinking that you require a 1mm shoulder for the suppressor the tighten against?
My Tikka muzzle has a diameter of 15.6mm so an M15x1 would be a little too big?

Also, can anyone recommend somewhere in the Waikato or Auckland where I can get my barrel threaded?
Don't want someone that is going to stuff up my rifle, but some places seem to charge up to $130 which seems pretty steep.

Depends on the manufacturer specs. At dpt yes, it is 1 mm.

Did they re-crown your barrel? I see they say they do this when threading and not sure what the reason is?

IF they take any length off, then recrowning is required. If they're only threading without shortening, then decrowning probably not necessary. But then, I'm not a gunsmith.

We re-crown all barrels we thread.
The live center sits against the crown while thread so that could cause damage to the existing crown, so a re-crown takes care of that.

Do all the other suppressor fitters do this? Yours is the only website that says you do, or do they use other methods of threading?

Not necessarily worried, more just interested into whether other places do it or not.
I suppose there is risk of stuffing it up and accuracy goes to shit, not that I'm suggesting you would stuff it up.
In some ways could improve accuracy if the rifle had a sub-par crown from factory.

I think gunworks may do it the same way but apart from them I have no idea.
We do thousands of rifles this way each year, so I wouldn't worry too much about it if I was you.

not a comment regarding crowning, but I have a number of rifles with suppressors and all except one I had the threading done by the company who supplied the suppressor (DPTx2, Hardyx1) and the only one I did differently was had a threading done by an unknown gunsmith via the gun shop I bought the 17HMR from. Cheaper and less hassle (so I thought). Ordered a can from Gunworks. The alignment must be slightly off as the first couple of rounds clipped the edge of the suppressor exit hole. Imagine if I had that issue with a high powered centrefire! From that experience alone I would urge you to get the suppressor supplier to do it

We recommend atleast 1.5 mm, so 15.6 mm is right about at the lower limit for M14x1 threads.

Using a live centre ensures your thread is concentric with the bore. Bloody sure thats the way I'd want it done.

We still need to dti the barrel and we can set it all up a different way where we use a grizzly rod but thats more costly and time consuming, we use that method only when fitting brakes.

Yes we put a thread relief in behind the thread, always pays to as if whatever you fit to the muzzle doesnt have a relief then it may not pull up onto the barrel shoulder.

@DPT just had my rifle threaded 1/2-20 by a local guy (haven't used him before), putting on your 1/2-20 can is fairly hard(no the rear bush isnt touching), but it goes on, If I try a 1/2-20 T2 Terminator Break it goes on easy as, any ideas what I can do to make your can go on easier? (haven't had troubles with other rifles threaded 1/2-20 with this can.)

Can you still do it fully up by hand or is it a struggle?

The thread in the suppressor must be slightly tighter than the one in the brake.
It always pays for the person fitting the suppressor to have it on hand so they can get a perfect fit.

IMO - Gunworks are sketchy with threads/suppressors. Mine is a Spartan for 7mm08, it has some random measurement that doesn't take stock standard 7mm08 suppressors from other/most companies...maybe it's a Gunworks thing? But it's a pain in the arse. 19inch barrel, might be lucky if I can rethread it later, don't really want to shorten it any further. I also understand that you can get the guys at the likes of DPT to match the thread but it's still a tad annoying.

Had fitter/machinist/armourer (ex NZ Army), mate fit a Waitaki Eng 30 cal Magnum suppressor to my Omark in 308W.
Barrel diameter measured 22.5mm, suppressor thread M18 x 1.
Goes on beautifully, tightens easily by hand and works a treat.
No 'strike', now need to tune the rig up. @ebf knows who I'm talking about. :innocent:

can do it most of the way by hand, last 1/2 is "rifle between legs and a firm hand" <-holy hell that could be taken the wrong way.
Could I lightly file the threads?

Its too tight, the thread on the muzzle needs a touch taken off it.
A file on the thread is not a good idea, take it back to the guy that fitted it.

Is that last 1/2. Half a turn or half of the thread?
If it's half a turn could it be catching on something like the shoulder?

11 degrees, appears to be the standard re-crown angle?

30 degrees, makes the crown a bit deeper for better protection.
