bedding issues

I have a Parker Hale Mauser and an M98 mauser stock that i'm trying to mate together. The issue I am having is that the front part is bedded nicely and the rear was awful.

I have dremeled the rear and left the front untouched. however to get the rear tang flush with the wood means that i need to remove maybe 10mm of wood and rear pillar.

another issue i'm running into is that the safety will hit the rear wood if i take anymore off yet the front and rear are still not level.


Q1: would I be better off building up the front to be level with the rear or is having it on the piss not a big deal?

this will just be a bush rifle/range rifle and mostly shooting cheap ball ammo so it is not a target rifle by any means

So the rear tang would be 10mm lower than the front lug ?

strange is the stock for a small ring and the action a large ring.....or vice versa?......
personally i think it doesnt matter what you do internally (as long as its bedded with a stainless pillar at the rear)more important to be flush at the top
so (a) it looks right
(b) it doesnt catch anything and collect crap

Dremel the front, then bed with epoxy.

Looks like the whole action is not seated deep enough in the stock to me. The bottom line of the ejection port is parallel to the stock, so I think both front and rear need to be relieved so the action sits in deeper. The top time of the stock should be the same as the centreline of the bore.

like i said trying to squeeze a large ring action into a small ring stock........ rout it out ..........will need shorter action screws too

no so I need to take maybe 10mm off to get the rear tang level.

I took the floor plate out and checked the front lug. it is pretty flush with the bedding so its just the rear tang that needs to be lowered and a cut out for the safety. just seems unusual

Take material out over the whole bedding job, not just the rear tang. Route it all out to your hearts content, install some simple pillars in the action screw holes so that its all to the right depth and then rebed the action and first 25-40mm of the barrel. Ensure you leave some relief at the rear of the tang, two layers of masking tape on the back end of the tang is usually sufficient. No point in doing a half arsed job, you have the action out of the stock and are going to putting bedding compound in most of it, so do the whole thing.

As above you need to remove material so you can bed the whole thing at once....you can't just lower one end or you will be twisting the stock and action when you tighten the screws.

The idea is to have the entire thing stress free and well supported by the bedding.

ok, it just appears that the front is ok height wise but the rear is too high as it has a Parker Hale trigger and not the standard M98 one.

i'll redo it all and see how it goes.
