Not much of a sport but pretty cool none the less
pretty cool engineering but i reckon a 10 year old could do as well as them, then try and strap it on your back and hunting something with it haha
interesting, I thought a bench rest rifle was still pretty much a rifle shape. those didn't really have a stock as such.
There is still plenty of skill, its just in other respects i.e. in the engineering and the load development, wind reading etc...
I admire the dedication it would take to build and operate one of those, but it doesn't spin my wheels - I'd rather go hunting myself.
kj
Shitloads of skill...
And a lot of technical innovations from benchrest flow down into other disciplines.
See how all those rifles are barrel blocked, free floating actions ? Then go look at some of the top end f-open rifles...
I don't see the point
Yeah with you on that Rushy a barrel locked into a fixed bench.............its not going to bloody move so if there was no wind those projectiles should be sitting on each shot fired at the target.
Yep where is the skill? They may as well have a 200 metre barrel touching the target.
Rushy, the skill is
A) reloading to an extreme level, cases sorted, projectiles sorted, neck turned etc, etc, etc
B) wind reading
If a normal person off the street had to reload 5 rounds (using standard reloading practises) and fire them thru one of those rifles (making guesses at wind adjustments), the chances of them getting the types of groups these guys get is just about nil.
Sorry ebf im with Rushy and Dundee just don't really get where the skill in shooting the gun bit is.
I do here what your saying about the wind and reloading, suspect wind would be the biggest factor.
Imagine how easy it would be to sight one of those in:thumbsup:
You guys are missing the fundamental point of BR :)
Imagine "normal" shooting is like F1 car racing, high end vehicle + highly skilled driver + top engineers.
BR is like having a competition where you don't drive the car around a track, but put it on a dyno and see which engine has the best performance and endurance running at top revs for an hour.
The whole point is to remove the shooter body position, cheek weld, stock bedding, etc variables from the equation.
Thats what makes it boring imo. If I was to spend so much time and money reloading and having a cool rifle I best be shooting that sucker my self
it's more about building it than operating it i think. It is an awesome piece of engineering for sure and i love the detail and look of them but once they are made there is a lot less input from the shooter to operate it. Virtually all the human element is gone. To me it's like the car horsepower competitions, usually he with the biggest bank account wins haha.
If I was going to do something like this I'd make it .50BMG then at least you can do some extreme long range stuff.
Its just a tiny cannon isnt it? Make it a fiddy wit a 40" barrel to make it interesting!
"Floats my boat" on an engineering level but not from a shooting perspective. I like a bit more input.
Its fine as a sport - so long as you accept it has the same has the same relationship to "normal" shooting as F1 does to my commute to work.
Different strokes for different folks.
What the little i know about reloading and reading wind is its a real science and some people really get into it.
You could say the the rifles are the excuse for reloading and playing with bullets
RR
It's competitive instrument calibration and I thought it was the most boring thing you could possibly do with a gun, but then someone took boring one step further by filming benchrest
