    best barrel length for a .308 ?

    hi guys, I am planning on changing my rifle set up and rebarrel from 6.5fatso to .308.

    what I would like to know what do you think will be the best barrel length for this? I have been thinking 22ich/20inch as I plan to use the rifle out to possibly 500yrds but also use it as a bush rifle so im kinda looking for a light weight all rounder but could also have a plan to fit a suppressor at a later date.

    the base of the rifle is built on a Remington titanium short auction with a McMillan carbon stock and once the conversion is finished I will fit a leupold vx-3 4.5-14x50 milldot with a m1 turret.

    I am open minded so let me know what you think and/or if there is a better calibre you think would work cheers!

    @longrange308 i have been thinking that but my new 7mmwsm is due back soon and i don't really like the loading costs involved in the 6.5 as i do shoot a few goats. i will also be selling the old barrel and 40x brass but not sure what thay would be worth

    Remind me what the fatso case is based off? Is it a short 338 lapua case?

    @longrange308 the 7mm will be my south island rifle and im really greedy as there both built on a ti short auctions. and between me and my brother we both have 7mmwsm and he also has a tikka in 7.08 bush pig that's good for 300yrds max so the .308 should fit in nicely as my first rifle was in .308 howa s/s and loved it and now im older i waste to much on rifles and not fast cars

    Will it feed fine going back to a small diameter case? I'd imagine it's been lengthened and opened up a lot to feed the fatso
    Maybe a nice 20-22 inch 7mm or 300 saum would fit it quite nicely

    @dale, 2 questions

    When you say cost for 6.5, is it projectile cost ? How is 30 cal going to be cheaper (or at least enough to make a difference) ?

    Second question, did you get the macmillan locally or import ? I'm keen to chat to someone who has experience in bringing in macmillan stocks from overseas, get the low down on what is involved etc.
