Second hand Leupold VX-3
4.5-14-40 CDS
For what purpose, and on what rifle?
Second hand Leupold is a good place to start. Just put a brand new Nikko Sterling FFP scope on the .22mag for shits and giggles. Bloody clear optics and in your price range.
If you look around you can get a Leupold vx3i new for that. Best in that price bracket tbh.
Mate in the naki is about to buy his first rifle, looking at a tikka 243 and will be shooting inside 300m. A second hand vx3 is a good idea I thought but he may be weird about it and want new
Another vote for the vx3i. Had both the 4.5-14 and 3.5-10 and liked them both.
Vx3 is pretty good but have found a brand new bushnell 4500 2.5-10 for 650. Would be hard to beat that. How would vx3 glass compare?
Second hand euro would be my choice.
VX3i 2.5-8x36 would be my choice, inside 300m 8 power is heaps with the bonus of a lighter package.
Definitely get the best deal and value 2nd hand. Older model VX3's 3-10 or 4.5 -14, retro fit S1 turret if need to dial, but for 243 under 300m there's no need.
Other options Burris Signature series 3-12x44 (last one I picked cost me $350), or even better if you find one Burris 6X 2-12x44, or Weaver Superslam 2.5 -10, or Bushnell Elite, .... if you're lucky you should get a Kahles 3-9x40 for that $$.
Have had great results with my Sightron Stac 3-16x44 - worth a look - good glass and for the price robust (if a wee bit on the heavy side)... have one currently on a 223
Defiantly VX3's, picked up a few second hand for $7-800.
I have a 4200 2.5-10x and rate it. Great scope for the price and I would happily own another. (Might even get one for the .243 I have just bought) Also have a Nikon Monarch 3 3-12x42 which is a good scope and in the price range you are looking. Probably too much magnification than is needed for <300m.
Sold my VX3 4.5-14 as the FOV was not good even on 4.5x but otherwise a great scope.
Leupold VX-R 2-7x33 firedot 30mm - as new immaculate $800 to your door... perfect for your application
VX-R is a great choice -- maybe this if you want higher mag

Nikon scopes are seriously under rated, very popular in USA but bit of an unknown here,Nikon make high end cameras so there glass is top notch.
Got a Meopta MeoPro 6-18x50 for $700 used. No complaints, functions well and more image density and clarity towards the end of dusk than most.
shikes for sub 300mtrs a fixed 6x or even a 4x would be ample unless you intend to be headshooting. I would be buying the best fixed power scope I could get...something like a Kahles 6x would be ample...mate has an older one that is a fixed 8x and so clear with great field of view you'ld swear it was a 4x .
or if set on a vari...a 3x9 will do anything you desire....2x7 if bush hobbit inclined...
vx3i 3.5-10 pick them up for 800 new, be carefull of the knock offs though ,nice and clear, decent field of view on 3.5x, life time guarantee
Nikon monarch3 3-12 or 4-16 are a nice scope for the money.
If buying new, vx3i or Nikon monarch. I have a monarch, and really like it. The bushnells and good value for money, but to me they are quite large in size given the power range.
Plenty of options if buying second hand and not in a hurry.
