Thread: brings scope(s) back from the US

Can anyone give the word on bring back a rifle scope(s) from the US in my luggage.

I see the restrictions on rifles but I can't find information about parts. I have also read elsewhere about restrictions on certain parts like mags, suppressors and the like but can't find much on bringing a scope back.

I figure I'm over there, I'm going to be at the range anyway and they may be cheaper over there so hey why not bring one home. But I would hate to part with my beer tickets and then have it taken off me at the border.

Might be safer to post it when you are in the states.

brought a scope back without issue in stored luggage. customs was not an issue. wouldnt bother buying a can over there, far cheaper here and no hassle

Don't forget some scopes are ITAR items and restricted to export.
Usually tactical types, ie most Trijicon models and a few other brands with mil spec type reticles, ie Leupold Mark 8.
While not 100%, go to Opticsplanet and look up the scope, the web page will usually say what restrictions there are for that model.

I posted a how to thread about this a couple of weeks ago on this forum. Others have offered more knowledgeable advice but i found on that day:
There wasnt any opportunity to declare the scope when leaving the USA.
The only oppportunity to declare it on arrival was a grey zone statement to mention anything over NZD700 purchased tax free which seemed to be to collect gst. Its not so easy to get sales taxx refunded in the US so i concluded there was no need to declare it.
Warranty can be an issue if an expensive scope as some are not valid outside USA. That put me off buying a swaro there in the past.

Unlikely they will be in the least bit interested on the way out. I left the states once with a rifle, shotgun, three scopes and other assorted paraphernalia including half a dozen knives and they couldn't have cared less. Had all the right paperwork but buggered if anyone wanted to look at it. Wandering around LAX with a big black gun case was no problem, even if you feel a bit weird. This was all post 9/11 etc....

What about purchasing optics in Germany and posting home.

I was in LA 3 weeks ago and bought a Leupold rangefinder from Bass pro. No problem bringing it back in my suitcase. It was under the $700 value though.

no issue, been there done that and did all the checking first. no permit required at this end and i even took it carry on and it was seen by customs/boarder control at both ports. if its its an optic and non military use then they really don't care

if you send it, it will uninsured unless you state the value correctly in the customs declaration, then you will get taxed by nz, or iff lost you will have to claim from stateside. easier just to pack it on
