    BSA 7x57 advice

Hey everyone. Sorry I'm new to the forum but I was wondering if I could get a little bit of help regarding a rifle I was recently gifted. It's a BSA 7x57 (guessing a monarch but I don't really know how to identify different models) and I'm wanting to know what to clean an old blued barrel with as I'm only used to cleaning stainless barrels and have heard that some newer cleaners can damage older rifles (I'm pretty clueless sorry)?

Also is there somewhere in the Cantabury area that does rebluing? The rifle is in pretty good nic but I want it to last long enough to pass it down to the kids.

    Any help is really appreciated.

clean barrel with light oil or breakfree type stuff...copper brushes,rag....shikes you have got yourself a REAL CLASSIC rifle. photos PLEASE.
dont let stuff soak into stock (other than a little oil on a rag) if really worried grab Mums 3n1 sewing machine oil and just use that.....

Size: 3.30 MB. I've since bastardised it with a new scope, hoping the old rings hold up for a bit. Thanks heaps for the quick reply. I have some hoppes in the cupboard, would that be ok?

    Hoppes is fine
    Nice rifle
He nui to ngaromanga, he iti to putanga.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

Looks like a BSA hunter? Are both open sights intact? Cool rifle.

Not sure who does reblueing in chch, but you can always find somebody elsewhere in the country, and get Hunting & Fishing or Shooters Supplies to send the rifle on your behalf.

As for preserving the blueing - a bit of gun oil on rag will do. Rub it in and wipe away any excess. You can then use a wax (I.e renaissance wax) over it. It'll waterproof the metal somewhat, and protect it from sweat etc. I can send you a can of the stuff. PM me if interested.

Top rifle is a BSA Supersport .22 - very good quality rifle, second is the BSA Hunter 7x57, last is a Birmingham proved d/b gun but I need to see more photos (side of action, proof marks on under side of barrels, and any writing on the top rib). Do not use this gun with steel shot under any circumstances! It appears to be reasonable quality but need to see the extra photos.

Nice BSA @Newbie. You could get Kevin Gaskill (Stock Doktor) to refurbish the stock, like this:

Forum member @Chop3r does reblueing...or you could just go shoot it like I should have done

Thanks Pauli I was going to give the stock a crack myself, just not sure quite how to strip the varnish off the checkering... I'll get intouch with Chop3r though, thanks heaps. Yeah I plan to take it out for a walk in August hence replacing the scope. Did you replace the butt plate?

Yes and Kevin removed the white spacer on the wrist grip. It looks cleaner in my opinion.
