    Bush hunting scope, 3-9 x 40 or 5-15 x 40?

Hi guys, after advice, i have two scopes sitting in my safe, Leupold VII 3-9 X 40 & Bushnell Elite 'tactical' (mil dot) 5-15 x 40

I mainly bush hunt in the NI, but will hit the tops from time to time, so should i set up the 'Bushy' on my rig,

    a Howa 1500 7-08 cal with a 20" barrel...

what are your expert, sought after opinions please!

and please dont tell me to get 'another scope' it will be one of the above!!!!!.......cheers

3 to 9 no question. 5 is too much in the bush

Id go with the 3-9x40 personally, 5 power is too much for most of the close north island bush, I had a 4-16 for a while and even found sometimes that 4 power was too much. I guess in the end you have to weigh up you options and put the scope on that suits your style of hunting.

The most inportant thing you must lurn is its not about the gun ,its about finding the deer,

your optic with the best glass, light gatering etc..
one will be better then the other..

dont get caught up in the hype of what x is better...
old man uses a x6 kahales for in the bush. worked ok for him even up the Kaimais.
every body has diffrent eyes and ideas

i only have a scope on my husky because its long action so i can carry it like a shopping bag.

try both and find what is best for you mate

the answer to that is obviously the leupold

I tryed bush bashing with my 4.5-14 over the weekend incase I saw something on a corresponding hill side
Im going to go boring old 3-9 or 3.5-10 for my do all rifle for out 400 ish max range(243)

and if you want to get fancy down the track and stretch things out further fit a cds dial to the leupy

I would consider 5-15x overkill on the rifle you describe no matter where you are hunting. You are unlikely to be shooting at anything small enough to require more than 9x magnification on a 708 with a 20" barrel.

Use the 3 to 9 Loopy Scouser and crank it down and leave it on 3
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

Leupold V11 LR would be a nice option . Just to cover the bases like
Gun control means using both hands

4power scope on my 7.62x39.and 6x on my 308 ( old leupold 6 compact with AO ,mill dot reticle and target turrets): I have shot that rifle accurately up to 800 yrs in f class competition. But I would probably not try my luck past 400 m on an animal with that set up.

She was already worn out then. She is an old sako with a lothar Walter barrel and a brown precision stock that was built to compete at European Metallic silhouette championship.
A friend of mine got it for one hunting season. I then bought it of him. Shot some nice roe deer with it in Europe.
Brought it with me in NZ.
Got my 3 first pigs with it and count less number of hares ,goats and magpies.
I entered 3 f-class competitions with it at Whatwhata , and I was not ashamed of the scores overall.

I have developed a subsonic load for it and accuracy is on par with my 300 whisper.
She is my do it all rifle.
