Less recoil and a flatter trajectory there is nothing in NZ that needs more than a 265 - 300 gr bullet. The 45-70 is a lot of fun to use but has more power than needed with 400+ gr bullets its a close call but the 444 is slightly more versatile for my hunting. If going after NT Buff the 45-70 with a good 400 gr is better than 444 in my experiance. Both would work but bigger is better with something that can fight back.
Velocity is thrilling, but diameter does the real killing.
