    Question calibre advice/general advice

hey everybody, curious to know what calibre i should run and what scope and suppressor,
ive got a 22 to practise with until i pull the pin on what big gun to get
i’d like to be doing shooting within 100-200 yards
would be mainly be shooting on farms and occasional public land
i’ve been thinking about a 308 with a 16” barrel with a large dpt over barrel suppressor
and a higher end magnification for scope.
don’t have a lot of experience with guns larger than .22 but have shot .270 and a .308
    cheers

Yes that tikka 308 would be a good set up to start with. Regarding the scope , you do not need to run too high a magnification. Anything around 3x9, 3.5x10 will do all you want. I run a 3.5-10 leupold on my short 308.

.308 with 3-9 scope and 150g soft point bullets is all you need in most scenarios in nz,shoulder a couple of different guns to see what fits best.

My last .308 was 18” with a magnum dpt I shot factory sako 150gn points and the more expensive sako 165tgk they both shot the near enough the same at 100 I used the soft point in calm conditions out to 200-250 and if it was gusty and 200-400 I’d use the 165gn worked well for me 3-10 scope

I run a 16inch Mossberg with a Muzzle forward and a 3-9 Bushnell. Shots out to 500 with relative ease, with 3-400 being the sweet spot with a fair few fallow taken.

Key is to practice with it and know at what magnification if its a 2 focal plane scope that your BDC lines up with. for me shooting 150g 308 its about 6.5x

Yes, what the others have said, a large power scope is more hassle than help. It is good when shooting beyond 200, but a hassle inside 100 (harder to find your target). It’s also heavier, longer, and sits higher. A variable that goes from low to high (less than 3 to more than 9) is heavier and more expensive than a 3-9.

The other thing with the higher variables is the ease with which one might leave it zoomed right in while in the thick bush.

I have a Burris FFII 3-9 on my .223 and can confidently hit rabbits / magpies/ goats heads out to 200. At 100-200 a half decent 3-9 will not hold you back at all.

    I shoot a 7.62x39 Ruger American,

Milsurp Fmj for practice and screwing around

Soft points for goats and deer.

I have found that it has enough beans behind it to knock down fallow deer at 100 or so metres and ammo is available and relatively cheap for a centrefire if you know where to look

some of you are getting a bit widiculous 7.62 x 39 yes fun on goats but not a serious deer rifle lacks range - 6.5 man bun yeah will do the job but overhyped as to knock down at range and if you decide you dont like it where the hell do you get rid of it they just are not selling - 308 270 7mm08 will sell
