Exactly! Codee's calibre preference is perfect for the ranges he wishes to shoot and the style of rifle he is thinking of. Nothing suggested will do it better.
The only aspect thats debatable is the high mag scope, which people have all ready suggested might not be necessary.
One other thing i'd also say, is if you have a mate with a 223 or 222, take time to ask them about it, and maybe shoot it if possible as well.
They're very versatile, no real recoil, cost less to feed, and you can take smaller animals like hares, goats, geese, wallabies, rabbits, feral cats etc with them. Things that a 308 is (debatably) too much cannon for.
In very skilled hands a 223 or 222 will reliably drop deer, but that's another rabbit hole for another day.
If you're a "Deer or nothing" kinda guy, then ignore this. But if not, file it away for later.
I've nearly finished 'The Venison Hunters' by Mike Bennett...he writes of 300m shots with his old Majestic 222, in one particular paragraph he mentions some stags in the Okuru approximately 800m away...him and his mate started sending the bad news and after aiming about 4m high the stags started dropping.
