Calibre, Rifle & Scope Sugestions For Longer Range Hunting

Looking to tap into the fountain of experience and knowledge that you other hunters and shooters have.

I'm looking to purchase a new rifle and scope setup for open country deer shooting.

I'm interested to get opinions on what works for other hunters.
I'm after a light weight rifle in a calibre that you can trust will do the job with one accurate shot at 500m+. As well as suggestions for optics that would back up this longer range shooting.

Thanks in advance for any advice and opions offered.

7mm STW, 10% better than a 7mm Magnum and that is 10% better than a .270....STW kicks like a .270 and is fitted with a Tasco 4 - 16 scope...shoots out to ranges way beyond anything else I have ever owned.

budget dependent, do you reload? thats gonna make a big change in caliber selection. if you want something basic that you can buy factory ammo for then id probably look at a tikka 6.5prc (probs roughtec but they all shoot the same really) with a vx5hd and a can of some description, right around that 5k mark but you haven't really said budget or anything

If Danny's rifle fits your budget, that would be one helluva rig for around the Southern Alps. Job done.

Thanks mate, I don't know much about the calibre but what you've got there looks handy. I wouldn't know where to start when it comes to reloading. Interested, but keen to see what others have to say.

This time round I'm looking to "do it once do it right" so budget isn't a handbrake within reason. Cheers.

Thanks mate, Don't know anything about reloading but if thats what is going to get the best option i'm not afraid to learn. Cheers for pointing out the budget, I've updated the post. Budget without being too silly is not an issue.

I'd be happy to load them for you till you get your own setup, and happy to teach you as well

you have said longer range so a Sako finn lite 2 or a Fierce in 7mm rem mag - neither rifle will need any special work to shoot well - scope if you are not to techo a Leupold Vari X 5 - CDS sysytem is easy and good for 500 - 600 metres reliably - whatever scope make sure it will go down to 3 power for bush hunting and 9-10 for longer range - there are better scopes such as Khales Swarovski Zeis GPO and Leica but some of them will require some training on how to get the best out of the scope for long range

A tikka will do the same as the above brands if your intrested to learn to reload Danny's handy to you and that is the perfect hammer right their proven accuracy and power to spare, as others said I forgot the prc is available now factory tikka another good option, I tend to stay away from the CDS as I enjoy changing things up but cds could be a good idea if shooting factory match ammo

you WONT go wrong with what Dannyb is offering.....seriously good bit of kit and he has done all the hard work setting it up and getting load tuned in...dont tell him I said so but he is mug to sell it...his loss your gain. the offer to show you the reloading game is pure gold too.... you wont ever want to go back to factory rounds again.
there is NOTHING on gods green earth you cant tip over with a dirty 06,if you are close enough and careful enough, there sure as shit isnt anything in NZ it cant handle with ease.... with ability to load it either light or very heavy you can do it all with same rifle.
