The two rounds have different magazine lengths so you could possibly run into feeding problems with the .308. It would be better to sell the .270 and buy a .308 or convert the .270 to .30-06.

screw out the .270 barrel,screw in a .308 one..job done pretty much I believe,same bolt, mag length wont be an issue.
there are rebarrel quotes closer to grand...
you might get lucky and pick up good 2nd hand barrel for couple of hundy

The US experimented with this with their M24 sniper rifle, in the form of being able to either use .308 (7.62x51) or a magnum caliber (.300WM springs to mind) on the same basic action and stock platform, just swapping the barrel and bolt out. In the end they elected not to do this, and the M24 has remained a 7.62x51 platform on the long action.
There are a few possible considerations with running the .308 length round on the longer action - including being able to seat the projectile out minimising the lost case volume when reloading with heavier projectiles which run into magazine length issues with the short actions. You can almost get up to .30-06 results with not losing case volume to the arse of the projectile. Also, the scope mounting can be slightly further apart on the long action as well, or you can possibly shift the scope further forwards if that's an issue. As well, due to the fact that a lot of the magnum rounds or long range rifles are on long action platforms there are often more choices for accessories in the long action size which is nice.
and unless the origonal barrel is poked..you will be spending $$$$ for not a huge amount of real world gain..... you can after all buy good 130-145-150grn loads in .270w that will do 99% of what you can do with .308 if not 100%
if you reload,there is nothing in it...why I sold the .308
Might just sell the .308 then. .308 is in my DNA, but really like the .270.

Some .30-06 chambers need to go a long way forwards to clear the old .308 shoulder fully out and not end up with a ring showing on the cases. No real advantage though if you aren't restricted for mag length as most heavier .308 pills still project down into the .308 case even though it's a long action, so you don't gain the volume you think you would and with handloading with the pill seated out you can often gain a useful amount over the short action mag lengths which really narrows the gap to the .30-06.Quote:

if you are patient a 308 rem 700 full rifle will pop up for less than the cost of this whole rebarrel
and then you can have two rifles
only rebarrel if you need something in a caliber its not offered in unless money isnt an issue, rebarrels cost more than second hand complete rifles these days
