Are the cheap lasers for scopes rubbish?

I'm shooting rats at close range (10metres and less) and I'm missing 50% of them.

Have a new Nikko Mountmaster3-90x40AO scope, but I'm guessing at such a small distance it won't work. took the original rubbish scope off, as it had the clarity of a turd window.

Problem is my air rifle does not come with any sights on it, so has to have a scope. Its a Benjamin Varmint (Crosman) .22 only $400. Came with a red torch and laser, but buggered if I can get the laser to stay true. Seems every time I move the gun the laser moves. Of course it could be just a crap laser.

I was wondering if I could get a decent quality laser for $100 or so and use that and take the scope off? Only shoot at night, so if the laser would not move around, it would be perfect. Just set it on the shot hole and go from there.

See them on Trademe for $50 or so, but it might be rubbish too. Don't want to go spending heaps as its a cheap gun and not worth spending a lot of money on.

Was considering buying a decent .177 as they are sposed too fly straighter than a .22 pellet, but at 10m or less I can't see a .22 dropping or rising, can you guys?

Sorry for stupid questions, but I want to hit and kill these Rats, and I'm getting pretty disheartened as I seem to now be hitting only 1 in 2. Gun has about 600 pellets through it, seems to like accupells. I feel like I shouldn't be using a scope at such short distance? I do use a red torch.

    Thanks guys for your knowledge!

    My 2 cents:

According to what I read about air rifles, they tend to shake the shite out of scopes.

Anything you put on them will have to put up with a lot of vibration, so if you have a poorly made laser on yours, it could be the wee thing's losing its mind every time you pull the trigger.

If you can afford it, splash out on something you know you'll swap over onto a better air rifle when you decide to buy one.

less than 10mtrs!!!!!!!!!! your pellets will still be below line of sight.at less than 10 metres things will be happening FAST.....move back another 10 metres and you should have more time to place shots better.

Put a peep sight on, you wont be sorry, rear peep clamps onto your rail, clamp second rail onto barrel behind shorter cut "silencer" with front post onto that. fast, accurate and strong.

Get yourself a Gamo viper express. air powered shotgun. I have one for shooting pigeons at my work. its excellent up to 10 meters. and dosn't penetrate buildings, tin roofs etc.
