Hi all, a mates getting a new rifle and needs a cheap range finder for 400m-500m max distance. I have only used Leica and leuplod and he hasn't got the budget for more than $300-$400.

When I started out I got a bushnell from cabelas, was like $250 landed. Was shit though :D
I think some of the Chinese ones do an ok job out to those distances.
I have a Nikko and it worked well. Its within the price range you are looking at too. or try a golf shop....

I had a cheap no-brand Chinese one for a few years, pretty muddy to look through but ranged reliably enough out to around 800yds in good conditions.
Replaced it with a second hand RX-IV that doesn't range any further, but has the TBR function to correct for slope and much clearer optics.
I've got a Leupold RX1 that I'm not using much now, bought it to rangefinder for my 300blk with subs but I usually just shoot supers and don't care about the range much. 6x23 lens, apparently 700m range but effectively about 350-400m from experience.
Optically pretty bloody good, I usually carry it instead of bins but need to upgrade my binos. Looking around $150
I have this one. The optics aren't great but it does range to the advertised 800m and it hasn't died yet.
