electrical contact cleaner may leave less of a residue than brakleen. Brakes are messy things to begin with so dont need to be scrupulously clean so that product may not be clean enough.
Interesting thread though - thanks

Small bits I put in hot/boiled or boiling water to help with degrease. Heated metal up as well. Haven't done enough to say it makes it work.
I did have a minor but good mistake a while back. Had to Redhill some scope bases for bigger screws and as such the bigger screw heads. Used my super blue using hot water as above. When I was done and happy enough I used oil on them and put them away.
Went away for work for the week. Came back to fit them and found some light rust where I blued. Ah no says I.
Lightly cleaned the rust off and it was a better colour than the other places I'd blued. Small version of rust blued lol
The super blue still hasn't arrived, but here's my findings with perma blue.
It came up a lot nicer on more modern Chinese steel (Norinco jw-15) than it did the almost 100 year old American steel. I'm guessing it's a much higher carbon content in the savage.
It also darkened up a lot more after oiling on the Norinco but not much difference on the savage. Still not nearly as dark as factory bluing.
Some of the parts rusted after blueing, but buffing back the rust bought it back to a nicely blued surface. Not sure why some parts rusted and some didn't, perhaps just moisture left on it from rinsing?
It will be interesting to see how the other products will go.
I have a Baikal single shot 12ga that I might do because I'm running out of things to keep me busy.
The stock refinishing went really well, and can confirm the armourall trick works really well. Coats were completely dry after 30 minutes, and 10-12 coats deep it was fully cured in a couple of days. I waited 4 days to be safe before buffing/polishing.
I just put a couple sprays on a clean rag and wiped it over the whole stock, then put thin coats of tru oil on a clean non linty rag and wiped it over the whole stock then hung up to dry. Buffed with 0000 synthetic steel wool then repeated this process a dozen or so times.
The JW-15 was a nightmare to work with. The timber was garbage splintery open pore wood. You sand it and it goes fluffy, and took chips out of it near the butt edge. Big open pores and splintered parts all over it.
The finish was a complete nightmare to strip. The savage was stripped and sanded in about 30 minutes, the Norinco took more like 6 hours. Using cabinet scrapers to remove the finish. It was thick and really hard.
I had to do some filling so I just used the sawdust and CA glue to fill the holes.
I also added a white stripe around the butt stock by cutting a piece from an ice cream container.
The grain isn't pretty but it's a lot better than it was, it was a terrible milky brown stain that was scratched and dinged all over. Looks much better now.
It will be interesting doing this process with a checkered stock, I'm thinking of practicing on the Baikal as it's another cheap gun that I'm not precious about before trying the BRNO.

Still looking out for an old butchered .303 Lee Enfield or something dirt cheap to play around with.
I have to stay busy otherwise I go crazy. This dang wheelchair is driving me nuts!
Try blueing the wheel chair :)
I've played around with different products on 3 different rifles now. I thought I had it sorted with excellent results with super blue, but it didn't take well on a Baikal receiver. Barrel looks awesome, really dark consistent color but the receiver is very blue and not very black with an iridescent look to it. Same thing with perma blue.
Wondering if I should strip it back to bare steel and hit it with a different product, or just live with it.
Live with it.... Can always revisit it later if not happy with how it lasts.
Give that savage a reblue birthday.
Thanks Micky, done the savage now... And the other two cheap guns in the safe (Norinco jw-15 and Baikal single shot 12)
Just doing the stock on the Baikal now. Going easy around the checkering and taking my time.. another 3 weeks in the chair and I have to stay busy before I loose the plot!
Photos!!!!!!!
Will do tomorrow, little ones going to bed now
But here's the barrel of the Baikal, it came up real nice
