As per title,
No single shots considered and probably not a Norinco either.
Have looked at a Ruger 10/22 (too heavy) and Henry but not that fussed
I would like something light and simple that's not going to cost the earth!
Browning SA-22, Miroku etc
Whats your thoughts?
Following. Have used my regular 10/22 as a take down in the past, works ok until you lose the pins holding the trigger assembly in :pissed off:
Gidday - I'm still on a 22 bent myself and take-down 22's are great . . . if you ever take them down. Biggest thing I reckon is the magazine system, the SA-22 is the pick of the semi's and the Marlin Model 39 (if you can find one) for a levergun if you can live with a tube mag.
Gets more complicated if you want a clip. I'm not a fan of the Rugers either, the wide magazine makes them fatter through the mid-section that sits in your hand, doesn't worry most people but I don't like it, doesn't carry right for me. I've got a couple of Marlin 795's, both the ordinary one and the Model 7000 (heavy barrel) function flawlessly, didn't cost much and shoot really well, the Papoose is the take-down version - here is a link to a cool conversion My Marlin Papoose abomination - RimfireCentral.com Forums
I was in Chch on Monday with time to kill so went to the big three shops there, and I must say I was a bit underwhelmed, I looked at 10 or more 22's including several round the $1500 + price range and got so morose my sister offered to buy me a rifle to cheer me up. Didn't take her up on it but got the hint and moved onto a horse-tack shop that gladly took her money.

The little Browning's are cool. My brother has an early original one. Shoots well and is reliable.
cant fault the browning. I personly prefer my 10/22 takedown and sold my browning. If you want slim gervarm made a very handy wee takedown .22 semi and they come up fairly often cheeper than the brownings
Yes, a mate has had one for 40ish yrs and still like new . Very slim fore end and tang area loading not the later side butt loading. Was told the early ones were prone to cracking/breaking through the loading port!?Quote:

I never found the missing fore end an issue. I put a barrel clamp quad rail on it and ran a under barrel spotlight for possums. Marlin will be way lighter than the Browning.Quote:

I've had an older Browning SA22 and a Marlin Papoose for similar reasons as you state, something light and compact to carry and be able to deal with a possum or simply to stalk a hare in the tussock in a quiet moment. I liked the Browning more but it was heavier. I know you don't want a single shot but for myself when I saw the Chiappa little badger single shots I had to have one, people smile as soon as they see it, it's great fun, super compact, light, accurate and quiet with a suppressor. Being single shot adds to the thrill of the hunt, I really like it

Papoose
+ Weight -lightest of the three
+ Carry case is compact as well but scopes can be awkward depending on size.
- no fore end to hold, but they are light enough that they don't need a great deal of support.
Ruger
+Same feel and size as a normal ruger- but this makes it the same weight so not as light and compact as the Papoose
+Same accessory range as Ruger 10/22s. Same mags, same scope bases etc.
+simplest and easiets take down function of the three rifles.
- Can fit three or four papoose's in their carry bags in the same box the ruger, in its bag, comes in. Much bulkier. More pockets = more space.
Browning
+Slender and ambidextrous if a lefty wants to use it.
+Fairly simple take down but not as easy as the ruger
- Do not wear gumboots if you dont want ejected hot shells thrown in them.
Price - from memory it would be the dearest of the two but 2nd hand ones pop up at reasonable prices.
All three are reasonably good rifles. And I liked all three when I had them. Which one would I get now if I had to choose one - Papoose all the way. A very light simple and reliable package. I would not be disappointed if someone gave me either of the other two and I would use them, but the papoose has the edge.

@gunnie did you end up selling the Gevarm takedown?
For pests around camp I made up some subsonic rounds for my deer rifle. Kills the possums well.
