Did a similar experiment 40 odd years ago and found the very best rust inhibiter was lanolin. My experiment wasnt as detailed or with as many products but with sheet iron coated with a variety of products including WD40 and dipped in the tide at Titahi Bay beach every second day, the lanolin/white spirits mix was without peer. Also makes a brilliant case lube . Used to be able to buy lanolin without any difficulty. Havent seen it around lately.
somewhere in my files (ahem)I have a formula for a powder solvent and gun lube from Frankford Arsenal dated 1800's which includes amoungst many other exotics lanolin at 5% that claims to prevent rust in black powder bores ,cannons etc. I made a batch up many years ago and found it worked very well. Sometimes the old stuff is just fine. I did note however that in a 22 unless you really cleaned up all traces of it from the bore it took about 40 rounds for the bore to condition.
